Spirit of Camphor

A 15-month-old child had crawled through spirits of camphor containing 10% camphor. Over the next 48 hours he became progressively ataxic and had several brief generalized motor seizures. The seizures persisted for 2 days despite appropriate therapy. Over 15 days he slowly improved recovery in motor and mental function was eventually complete. The child had no further seizures until 1 year later, when a camphorated vaporizer containing 4.81% camphor was administered by the mother. During inhalation there was a brief major motor seizure. 

Cam] orated Lotion. Diluted solution of diacetate of lead, 8 fluid ounces spirit of camphor, 2 drachms mix, and shake well. Refrigerant and anodyne. Employed in erysipelatous infiammations, bums, contusions, sprains, excoriations, c. 

Remedy for Cold in the Head. Pollioo, of France, recommends the inhaling of hartshorn for curing colds in the bead. The inhalation by the nose he recommends 7 or 8 times in 5 minutes. Spirits of camphor may bo used in the same manner with beneficial results. 

Remedy Ibr Diarrhea. Tincture of opium, spirits of camphor, essence of peppermint, ethereal tincture of capiscum, of each i ounce syrup of kino, 1 ounce ncu-tralixing cordial, 2 ounces (see A o. 5G33) brandy, 2 ounces. Mix. Dose, one tablo-Bpoonlul, may be given every twenty minutes if tho COSO is urgent. In dysentery givo 1 table-spoonful 3 times a day. This is an excellent remedy. 

Mix together 1 ouuco essence of Jamaica ginger 2 ounces ca[Pg.326]

Cholera Tincture. Tinctures of rhubarb, cayenne, opium, and spirits of camphor, with essence of peppermint, canal parts of each, and each as strong as can ue made. Dose, m 5 to 30 drops, or even to CO, and repeat until relief is obtmned, every 5 to 30 minutes. Many lives have been saved by the timely use of this valuable medicine.

Spirit of Camphor. A soln of camphor in alcohol contg 10 g camphor per 100 ml soln. 

Dissolve the chloride of ammonium in the diluted acetic add, and add the spirit of camphor. 

The process can be applied to the determination of camphor in galenicals, but, except for Spirit of Camphor, direct determination is not feasible, and separation is necessary. Separation by steam distillation was found very satisfactory, only traces of other reacting substances being carried over. 

Spirit of Camphor, B,P.C, A simple solution of camphor, 10 per cent w/v, in 90 per cent alcohol.
