Elastomeric adhesives are natural or synthetic polymers with superior toughness and elongation. Latex is a stable dispersion of a polymeric material (Table 8.13) in an essentially aqueous medium. An emulsion is a stable dispersion of two or more immiscible liquids held in suspension by small percentages of substances called emulsifiers. In the adhesives industry, the terms latex and emulsion are sometimes used interchangeably. There are three types of latex natural, synthetic, and artificial. Namral latex refers to the material obtained primarily from the rubber tree. Synthetic latexes are aqueous dispersions of polymers obtained by emulsion polymerization. These include polymers of chloroprene, butadiene-styrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, acrylate, methacrylate, vinyl chloride, styrene, and vinylidene chloride. The properties required of a liner to perform this function include the ability to adhere permanently to the tyre carcass, heat resistance, flexibility and flex crack resistance over the full operating temperature range and a low level of permeability to air and moisture. Regular butyl rubber cannot be used in this application except, in the form of butyl reclaim, as a flexible, highly impermeable filler for other elastomers, because it cannot be made to adhere strongly enough to the tyre carcass. Reclaim Rubber. Rubber recovered from scrap rubber goods, primarily by digestion or mastication at elevated temperatures, consists of soluble hydrocarbon, crosslinked rubber, and about 30% carbon black, plus minor amounts of oil, tackifiers, and curative residues. The rubber content of reclaim derived from tires is a mixture of SBR and NR, while butyl reclaim is derived from inner tubes. One of the principal virtues of reclaim is price.
