Low viscosity cellulose acetate is used in lacquers and protective coatings for paper, metal, glass, and other substrates and as an adhesive for cellulose photographic film because of its quick bonding rate and excellent bond peel strength (135) (see Coatings). Heat-sensitive adhesives for textiles have also been prepared from cellulose acetate (136). Extmded cellulose acetate film makes an excellent base for transparent pressure-sensitive tape (137) (see Adhesives).

Terpene monomers are another class of interesting natural monomers because they give, on polymerization, hydrocarbon therplastic resins that exhibit a high degree of tackiness useful in pressure sensitive tapes [25]. They are also used for sizing paper and textile materials. Terpene-phenol resins are effective heat stabilizers for high-density polyethylene. 

Pressure-sensitive tapes Unlike the more recently developed petrolatum tapes which rely on both the petroleum and backing films, the pressure-sensitive tapes offer protection which depends almost entirely upon the prevention of ingress of moisture to the metal surface by the tape itself. 

Laminated tapes In more general use now than pressure sensitive tapes are tapes consisting of polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene films in conjunction with butyl rubber. These tapes are applied with an adhesive butyl rubber primer. Thicknesses of up to 0-75 mm are in use and loose protective outer wraps of p.v.c. or polyethylene sheet are commonly applied. Tape quality control is exercised with reference to ASTM standard test methods and may include water vapour transmission rate and elongation.

Working with less dilute solutions of elastomers one cannot fail to notice the influence (the stiffer the greater the effect) of molecular structure on the onset and course of non-Newtonion flow, on gelation and swelling, and the influence of the solvent as expressing itself by virial coefficients, molecular dimensions in solution, spinnability, and film forming. Packaging films (extruded, blown, and cast) are used in pressure-sensitive tapes and electrical applications and as replacements for cellophane and glassine films in liners for cereal boxes, wraps for snack foods, cigarettes, bread, and cheese. Blow-molded containers are used in applications where the higher use temperature of polypropene is needed (compared to HDPE), such as in packaging of syrups that are hot-filled. 

At high (50—100 pph) saturation levels, with a near thermoplastic elastomer, a leather-like material results that can be embossed. The paper web used in pressure-sensitive tape is prepared by latex saturation in order to give it sufficient internal strength to release without delamination.
