Ytterbium metal has possible use in improving the grain refinement, strength, and other mechanical properties of stainless steel. One isotope is reported to have been used as a radiation source substitute for a portable X-ray machine where electricity is unavailable. Few other uses have been found. 

There are a number of important concepts which emerge in our discussion of viscosity. Most of these will come up again in subsequent chapters as we discuss other mechanical states of polymers. The important concepts include free volume, relaxation time, spectrum of relaxation times, entanglement, the friction factor, and reptation. Special attention should be paid to these terms as they are introduced. 

Equation (2.61) predicts a 3.5-power dependence of viscosity on molecular weight, amazingly close to the observed 3.4-power dependence. In this respect the model is a success. Unfortunately, there are other mechanical properties of highly entangled molecules in which the agreement between the Bueche theory and experiment are less satisfactory. Since we have not established the basis for these other criteria, we shall not go into specific details. It is informative to recognize that Eq. (2.61) contains many of the same factors as Eq. (2.56), the Debye expression for viscosity, which we symbolize t . If we factor the Bueche expression so as to separate the Debye terms, we obtain... 

Remember the units involved here For f they are length time for N, length and for t, time. Therefore the exponent is dimensionless, as required. The form of Eq. (4.24) is such that at small times the exponential equals unity and 6 = 0 at long times the exponential approaches zero and 0 = 1. In between, an S-shaped curve is predicted for the development of crystallinity with time. Experimentally, curves of this shape are indeed observed. We shall see presently, however, that this shape is also consistent with other mechanisms besides the one considered until now. 

A PVDF membrane filter has been shown to remove >10 particles of vims for vimses >50 nm independent of fluid type (8). Vimses smaller than 50 nm are not removed as efficientiy but are removed in a predictable manner which correlates to the vims particle size. The chemistry of the suspending fluid affects titer reduction for vimses <50 nm owing to other removal mechanisms, such as adsorption, coming into play. The effects of these other mechanisms can be minimized by using filtration conditions that minimize adsorption. 

The other mechanism proposes that the trichloride is formed by the further chlorination of the oxyhahde as ihustrated in equations 7—10 (13). 

Methane oxidations occur only by intermediate and high temperature mechanisms and have been reported not to support cool flames (104,105). However, others have reported that cool flames do occur in methane oxidation, even at temperatures >400 ° C (93,94,106,107). Since methyl radicals caimot participate in reactions 23 or 24, some other mechanism must be operative to achieve the quenching observed in methane cool flames. It has been proposed that the interaction of formaldehyde and its products with radicals decreases their concentrations and inhibits the whole oxidation process (93). 

For sodium palmitate, 5-phase is the thermodynamically preferred, or equiUbrium state, at room temperature and up to - 60° C P-phase contains a higher level of hydration and forms at higher temperatures and CO-phase is an anhydrous crystal that forms at temperatures comparable to P-phase. Most soap in the soHd state exists in one or a combination of these three phases. The phase diagram refers to equiUbrium states. In practice, the drying routes and other mechanical manipulation utilized in the formation of soHd soap can result in the formation of nonequilibrium phase stmcture. This point is important when dealing with the manufacturing of soap bars and their performance. 

Other mechanisms, involving initial formation of ethylene oxide [75-21-8] as the possible rate-limiting step, complexation of CuC with HCl (92), and C as the chlorinating agent (93) have been suggested.
