The following chapter contains a collection of six papers specifically dedicated to the topic of metal/graphite composites as candidate active materials for the negative electrodes of the lithium-ion batteries of the near future. Editors believe this chapter to be a very first attempt made in the worldwide electrochemical literature to group metal/graphite composite lithium-ion battery developers into a stand-alone section of a book.

About ten years after the publication of Barrow s tentative specifications, a survey was undertaken to develop and authenticate revised specifications for permanent/durable book paper. The resulting new specifications called for higher levels of initial strength and lower rates of deterioration, but of the thirty-two papers tested, eight satisfied all requirements, whereas there was only one a decade earlier (9,10). The minimum pH was raised from 6.5 to 7.5. This one relatively simple test would permit the elimination of some papers from consideration without any need for more complicated evaluation methods.

Before the pulp can be made into paper, it is necessary to mechanically beat or refine it. It is also usually bleached with chlorine and calcium hypochlorite. Unbleached kraft pulp is used for grocery bags and heavy wrapping paper. Other materials may also be added to the pulp depending on the type of paper to be made. For book paper, fillers such as white clay and titanium oxide may be added to provide opaqueness and extra whiteness. Size may be added for stiffness and smoothness. Dyes are added for tinted papers. The specific combination of pulp and additives used to produce a particular type of paper is called the furnish for that paper. With better grades of paper, care is taken to produce a furnish that is chemically neutral (pH 7 on the acid-base scale). For a paper to have long life, it must be acid-free. 

This series provides more timely publication of original research papers presented at ACS symposia. Books in this series usually cover rapidly developing areas of chemistry, for which time of publication is especially important. However, these books are not simply proceedings material is often added to enhance the comprehensiveness of the subject coverage. Each paper undergoes peer review. This review is conducted by the editor of the book with specific guidelines provided by the ACS Books Department. After review and revision, the authors provide camera-ready copy. 

This chapter is a general guide to writing a scientific paper. Specific guidelines for text length, preparation of figures and tables, and instructions on how to submit your paper differ from journal to journal and publisher to publisher. The extensive literature available on the catalytic activation of dioxygen has been treated in a number of excellent earlier review papers, some of which have appeared as chapters of books on specific, predominantly biological aspects of the subject. Three symposium proceedings devoted to this field have also been published in the period of 1988 - 91.

As mentioned in Chapter 14, it was my usual practice during my career that whenever I felt that I had substantially achieved my goals and interest in a specific field of my research, I wrote (or edited) a book or comprehensive monograph of the field. The first chapter presents the general aspects of the reaction Chapters 2-6 illustrate the various methods and their applications in organic synthesis. At the end of each chapter a list of graphically abstracted Diels-Alder reactions is presented to show selected synthetic applications of the specific methodology. The discussion of the various topics is not exhaustive because our aim has been to emphasize the synthetic potential of each method. Chapter 7 reports a list of books, reviews, monographs and symposia proceedings which have appeared since 1990 and an index of keywords to help the reader find a particular paper of interest. 

The rates of chemical processes and their variation with conditions have been studied for many years, usually for the purpose of determining reaction mechanisms. Thus, the subject of chemical kinetics is a very extensive and important part of chemistry as a whole, and has acquired an enormous literature. Despite the number of books and reviews, in many cases it is by no means easy to find the required information on specific reactions or types of reaction or on more general topics in the field. It is the purpose of this series to provide a background reference work, which will enable such information to be obtained either directly, or from the original papers or reviews quoted. 

It should be understood that the reported practices of polymer/additive analysis, being the focus of this book, equally well apply to additive analysis of rubbers, textile fibres, surface coatings, paints, resins, adhesives, paper and food, but specific product knowledge gives the edge. Both fresh and aged materials may be analysed, as well as those of both industrial and forensic origin.
