White Clay

Fig. 16. Two-hquid flotation flow sheet (39). The original ROM is kaolin (white clay) that contains 11% impurity in the form of mica, anatase, and siUca. Treatment produces high purity kaolin and a Ti02-rich fraction. A, Kaolin stockpile D, dispersant (sodium siUcate plus alkah) W, water K, kerosene C, collector (sodium oleate) RK, recycled kerosene S, screen M, inline mixer SPR, separator CFG, centrifuge P, product and T, to waste. Polymer-type antioxidants have been prepared by Eriedel-Crafts reaction of -cresol andp- and/or y -chloromethylstyrene in the presence of boron trifluoride-etherate (198). The oligomeric product resulting from the alkylation of phenyl-a-naphthylamine using C12—15 propylene oligomer in the presence of AlCl or activated white clays is used as an antioxidant additive for lubricating oils (199). [Pg.563]

Lakes. Lakes are a special kind of color additive prepared by precipitating a soluble dye onto an approved iasoluble base or substratum. In the case of D C and Ext. D C lakes, this substratum may be alumina, blanc fixe, gloss white, clay, titanium dioxide, 2iac oxide, talc, rosia, aluminum ben2oate, calcium carbonate, or any combination of two or more of these materials. Currentiy, alumina is the only substratum approved for manufactuting FD C lakes. [Pg.444]

This, then, is a tin amalgam intended to give the appearance of asem or silver. The earth of Chios as described by Pliny appears to have been a white clay. Pliny says it was used by women as a cosmetic. [Pg.82]

What we know of the techniques of glass making during the Middle Ages comes mainly from the description by Theophilus (9). According to him two parts of beechwood ashes and one part sand were mixed thoroughly and placed in a furnace to be fritted. The fritted mixture was distributed to white clay pots which were fired to melt the glass. [Pg.113]

Porcelain is a special kind of ceramic. Porcelain is made from pure white clay and other materials. It is translucent, waterproof and is used for making chinaware. [Pg.96]

The composition of the DFAA pool in streams and rivers has been described for only a few sites, but these data show some consistency in their patterns. In White Clay Creek glycine and aspartate made up 40% of the DFAA, and when alanine, glutamate, serine, and threonine were included, these six amino acids accounted for 70% to 75% of the total DFAA (Volk et al., 1997). In the Lilian and Stridbacken, two boreal rivers, glutamate, aspartate, serine, and alanine were the dominant DFAA (Stepanauskas et al., submitted for publication). The White Clay Creek eventually flows into... [Pg.105]

This concentration is considerably lower than 330 pg C/L, the sum of all monomers in Figure 2. However, there are several caveats to consider. First, not all monomers can be expected to have the same lability as glucose, and, in fact, Figure 4 shows that at the velocities normal for White Clay... [Pg.111]

The small soft African eagle-stone, containing soft white clay, as in a womb. It is easily crumbled to pieces, and has been regarded as feminine. It is found at the present day full of yellow clay, and is the Geodis of Dioscorides. [Pg.16]

Before the pulp can be made into paper, it is necessary to mechanically beat or refine it. It is also usually bleached with chlorine and calcium hypochlorite. Unbleached kraft pulp is used for grocery bags and heavy wrapping paper. Other materials may also be added to the pulp depending on the type of paper to be made. For book paper, fillers such as white clay and titanium oxide may be added to provide opaqueness and extra whiteness. Size may be added for stiffness and smoothness. Dyes are added for tinted papers. The specific combination of pulp and additives used to produce a particular type of paper is called the furnish for that paper. With better grades of paper, care is taken to produce a furnish that is chemically neutral (pH 7 on the acid-base scale). For a paper to have long life, it must be acid-free. [Pg.750]

Preparations made by extending any of the above colors on a substratum of alumina, blanc fixe, gloss white, clay, zinc oxide, talc, rosin, aluminum benzoate, calcium carbonate, or any combination of these listed substances. [Pg.663]

From inquiries among Mexican archaeologists and ethnologists it became evident that no majolica is presently produced in the Valley of Mexico, but we found that there is still a small majolica production in Puebla. The majolica manufacturers visited in this city were the La Trinidad factory (Guevara sisters) and the Santa Maria factory (Padierna family). Both manufacturers work in an identical manner and use a clay body blended from a mixture of equal amounts of a black and a white clay. [Pg.169]
