This I Believe

In Britain, the security of the British pound had proved key to London s position as the financial capital of the world before World War I. As Sir William Harcourt, Gladstone s chancellor, wrote in 1892 London... is the Metropolis of the Commerce of the World to which all nations resort to settle their business. This I believe... to be owing to the soundness of our monetary system, London being the only place where you can always get gold. It is for that reason that all the exchange business of the world is done in London (quoted in Mayhew 176). But such optimism about the availability of gold was not always justified. 

With the advent of techniques such as this, I believe that in the next ten years our understanding of substitution kinetics is going to take a giant step forward. We are going to be able to make observations which the organic chemist is able to make now, that is, take an instantaneous snapshot of the relative arrangement of the atoms in the complex, and draw mechanistic conclusions based on stereochemistry. 

I note that some data in the paper emphasize, for the examples given, that nickel and palladium reactions are considerably faster than the platinum (I I) reactions. This, I believe, is true for all the examples cited in the paper. It might be interesting to discuss this point. I would like now to open the topic for discussion from the audience. 

At other times Stendhal, looking back, observes himself to have been natural, yet to have failed to benefit from it. If a paper appears to be an honest, scholarly effort, the reviewer should try to be helpful and encouraging. This I believe to be of major importance to strong intra- and interdisciplinary effort. Gratuitous recommendations for further experimental work should never be made. 

As a prelude to my comments on Heinrich s accident causation theory, I would like readers to understand this I believe that those who proclaim that unsafe acts are the principal causes of accidents do the world... 

This I believe I believe safety is important. Each of us as human beings has a responsibility for our own safety and the safety of others. The first time we hold a newborn child we begin to truly understand safety...

My friend, David Browne of Coppercliff, Ontario, was seeking information about his copper ore from the Coppercliff Mine. He sent samples to a number of assayers, and among others, to Mrs. Richards. All the others returned results in copper, and, I dare say, they did not know that they were to look for anything else. She, on the other hand, gave him a percent of copper in the ore and also reported five percent of nickel. This, I believe, was the beginning of the great nickel industry of which Coppercliff Mine was the center. David Browne always said that Mrs. Richards was the best analyst in the United States. ... 

The non-mathematical chemist can develop a "feeling" for resonance, however, which will enable him to make intelligent use of it, and I hope that I am beginning to do this. I believe that what I said about the cause of resonance is correct, but I don t understand very clearly what it means. Nevertheless I was able to use the idea, as you saw. The various component stmctures can be worked out by the non-mathematical chemist if he follows certain simple, half-empirical mles which ensure that the stmctures he takes have somewhere about the same energy (the range can be two or three volt-electrons, I believe).
