Inspection by independent persons or bodies for safety purposes goes back to the middle of the nineteenth century. At that time, the focus of concern was the explosion of steam boilers, and this hazard was most prevalent in the textile industry. Consequently, a group of public-spirited individuals formed the Manchester Steam Users Association for the Prevention of Boiler Explosion. This body carried out boiler examinations and later added insurance as an inducement to the plant owners. By the beginning of the twentieth century steam and gas engines and electrical machines had been added, followed by lifts, cranes and hoisting machines. [Pg.140]

Inspection Authority The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors is composed of the chief inspectors of states and municipalities in the United States and Canadian provinces which have made any pari of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code a legal requirement. This board promotes uniform enforcement of boiler and pressure-vessel rules. One of the board s imporiant activities is providing examinations for, and commissioning of, inspectors. Inspeciors so qualified and employed by an insurance company state, municipality, or Canadian province may inspect a pressure vessel and permit it to be stamped ASME—NB (National Board). An inspector employed by a vessel user may authorize the use of only the ASME stamp. The ASME Code Committee authorizes fabricators to use the various ASME stamps. In the incident some of the "hot" tubes became overheated, and started to bulge. Eventually one of the tubes burst open and the contents of the boiler were discharged into the environment. No one was injured in the explosion, but it took several months to repair the boiler and the cost was heavy. The selection of controls for space heating a building shows how the overall efficiency of the process can be improved. Whether or not it is cost effective to do this must be examined in detail. At its most basic, such a system might include one or more LPHW boilers, a single thermostat in the heated space controlling the circulating pump on/off, and domestic hot water from a calorifier. [Pg.279]

Many boilers do operate at low load factors and consequent poor annual efficiencies. This can be avoided by providing boiler plant with little or no margin over the actual required capacity and by installing multi-boilers or two or three smaller boilers. Boilers of this modular type are available for low-pressure hot water (LPHW) purposes, but obviously cost more than a single boiler. This will also increase the maintenance, number of examinations and the labor costs. The use of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) obviates the coupling problems already referred to, and has been applied successfully to the inspection of boiler tubes. Ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD), developed by the Harwell Laboratory" , is utilised to fingerprint flaws (cracks) in process plant. Subsequent examination at, say, six month intervals can indicate any growth or extension of the crack. It is claimed that changes in crack height of 0-5 mm or less be estimated. [Pg.1145]

Boiler fireside walls, baffles, tubesheets, tubes and drums should be cleaned to remove ash and soot before examination. Where soot blowers are installed, they should be utilized as a means of cleaning fireside surfaces before the boiler load has dropped to 50% and should not be operated again, especially if the fire has been extinguished because a risk of explosion exists. [Pg.614]

The thin-section methods of the petrologist may be used for artificial specimens which are in the form of large aggregates—specimens of such materials as refractories, bricks, and boiler scales. Instead of powdering them and using immersion methods, it is possible to grind thin sections and examine them. When it is simply a question of distinguishing between a few possible constituents of known characteristics, this is a useful method. But in unfamiliar systems the powder method is likely to be more useful for identification purposes the principal function of the thin-section method in such circumstances is to provide information on the distribution, orientation, or size of the crystals of the different constituents. [Pg.105]
