Later, better cements appeared based on c. 50% solutions of orthophosphoric acid. But even these were far from satisfactory. As always with dental cements, the problems revolved around the control of the setting reaction the reaction between zinc oxide and orthophosphoric acid was found to be far too fierce. By the time of Fleck s 1902 paper these problems had been solved. The importance of densifying and deactivating the zinc oxide powder to moderate the cement reaction had been recognized. Of equal importance was the realization that satisfactory cements could be produced only if aluminium was incorporated into the orthophosphoric acid solution. The basic science underlying this empirical finding was elucidated only in the 1970s. [Pg.205]

Basic science in the general field of macromolecules includes the principles of their synthesis the investigation of the size and structure of individual molecules in solution, and the relationship between structure and properties in the bulk phase. Approximately 450 scientists in 90 laboratories all over the world devote the major portion of their time to basic science in the subject field. The results of their work are published in about 150 technical journals which include literature on plastics. Reviewing the literature at present is difficult. The author suggests services which include a weekly news letter, monthly journal for papers, semiannual journal for review articles, and formula and data sheets in addition to regularly appearing monographs, textbooks, and handbooks. [Pg.122]

All experimental methods and data, all compilations and correlations, and all theoretical interpretations emerge from a number of laboratories in which scientists devote their efforts to work on basic science in the general field of macromolecules. The Commission on Macromolecules of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is just now completing a world-wide survey of such laboratories as to their location, number of scientific and technical workers, equipment, field of special interests, and yearly scientific output. Paper production. In the basic process for the manufacture of paper or board, a slurry of cellulose fibres and fillers in water is spread onto screens and the water allowed to drain away leaving a paper mat which is then pressed and further dried off by steam heat. The formulation of the slurry is regarded as the papermaker s art but addition of processing aids, speciality chemicals to aid the production process, based on basic science can assist in the faster, cheaper and, most important, cleaner production of paper and board. Retention of solids on the screens, speed of drainage of water away from the slurry in the forming area and improved dryability are the areas in which the cleaner technology manifests itself. [Pg.59]
