Thoracic surgeons

The first step in treatment of NSCLC involves confirmation of the clinical stage and determination of resectability of the tumor. This decision always should be made by a thoracic surgeon who routinely performs lung cancer surgery. Treatment options depend on the advancement of disease (i.e., local, locally advanced, or metastatic).

This author is grateful to thoracic surgeon (and outstanding drosophila investigator) Walter J. Burdette, who within his authority released intra-instimtional funds to the Section. As one of the institutional members excelling in basic sciences outside the operating room (out of his many prominently published papers, one was submitted to Cancer Research on Feb 8, 1972 and was accepted for publication on Feb 8 1972) [2293a-c], Walter Burdette openly declared his support for the DM. However, on one day, Walter was summarily dismissed from the institution. 

Our only exclusion criteria are an uncorrectable coagulopathy and more than five metastases per hemithorax. Brown et al. [18] documented statistics of isolated AVR in North America for 108,687 patients during the period from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2006, compiled from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database. The number of isolated AVR surgeries increased from about 10,000 to over 16,000 procedures per year. Although the specific percentage of mechanical versus bioprosthetic valves implanted is a topic of debate, almost 98% of all AVR procedures used one of these two alternatives. The STS Executive Summary Adult Cardiac Surgery Database provides statistics of valve replacement procedures up to December 2010 in North America [19], In 2010, over 25,000 isolated AVRs were performed, in addition to over 18,000 replacements along with coronary artery bypass (CAB). About 1500 patients underwent combined aortic (AV) and mitral valve (MV) replacement. 

Data from the Australasian Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons (ASCTS) database project indicate that a total of 3544 AVR procedures were performed between July 2001 and June 2008 in Australia...
