Barium laurate

Laurone has been prepared by hydrating and decarboxylating decylketene dimer.3 It has also been prepared by distilling calcium laurate 4 by heating lauric acid with phosphorus pent-oxide 5 by heating barium laurate under reduced pressure 6 by the ester condensation of ethyl laurate with sodium ethoxide 7 or of methyl laurate with sodium hydride 8 followed by ketonic hydrolysis by catalytic ketonization of lauric acid over a chromate catalyst 9 or by passing lauric acid over thorium dioxide at 400°.10... [Pg.71]

H.L. Blachford Ltd. Metallic Soaps and Stabilizers Barium Laurate ... [Pg.72]

Typically, soHd stabilizers utilize natural saturated fatty acid ligands with chain lengths of Cg—C g. Ziac stearate [557-05-1/, ziac neodecanoate [27253-29-8] calcium stearate [1592-23-0] barium stearate [6865-35-6] and cadmium laurate [2605-44-9] are some examples. To complete the package, the soHd products also contain other soHd additives such as polyols, antioxidants, and lubricants. Liquid stabilizers can make use of metal soaps of oleic acid, tall oil acids, 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid, octylphenol, and nonylphenol. Barium bis(nonylphenate) [41157-58-8] ziac 2-ethyIhexanoate [136-53-8], cadmium 2-ethyIhexanoate [2420-98-6], and overbased barium tallate [68855-79-8] are normally used ia the Hquid formulations along with solubilizers such as plasticizers, phosphites, and/or epoxidized oils. The majority of the Hquid barium—cadmium formulations rely on barium nonylphenate as the source of that metal. There are even some mixed metal stabilizers suppHed as pastes. The U.S. FDA approved calcium—zinc stabilizers are good examples because they contain a mixture of calcium stearate and ziac stearate suspended ia epoxidized soya oil. Table 4 shows examples of typical mixed metal stabilizers. [Pg.550]

This procedure has been used successfully for many years in the preparation of ethyl laurate, caprylate, and myristate by the alcoholysis of cocoanut oil (1 kg.) in ethanol (1900 g.) with hydrogen chloride (50 g.) as a catalyst.3 The method differs slightly from the one described above. The alcoholysis is complete after fifteen or twenty hours, and the solution is then neutralized to methyl orange with barium carbonate. The mixture is added to an equal volume of a saturated sodium chloride solution, whereupon 1100-1300 g. of the mixture of crude ethyl esters separates. This mixture of esters is washed with water and fractionated as described above. The yields are approximately 50 g. of ethyl caprylate, 350 g. of ethyl laurate, and 60 g. of ethyl myristate from 1000 g. of cocoanut oil. [Pg.94]

Metal Soaps—Barium and cadmium stabilizers are less toxic than lead and have lower cost on the basis of use levels, better sulfide stain resistance, and good clarity. They are a major class of heat stabilizers. Calcium and zinc soaps are also included in this classification because of their similar performance. The soaps used are based on a wide variety of anions such as octoates (2-ethyIhexanoic acid derived), benzoates, laurates, stearates, and substituted phenolates. [Pg.427]
