Octyl butyrate

Octyl Butyrate.—This occurs naturally in a few essential oils. It is an oil boiling at 244°. and having a strong, fruitv odour. Its formula is CH3(CH2)700. C. (CH2)2,CH3. [Pg.168]

The sex pheromone of Trigonotylus caelestialium represents an interesting case because the three components of the blend (hexyl hexanoate, ( )-2-hex-enyl hexanoate, and octyl butyrate, -10 5 1) are produced by both sexes, along with a number of similar compounds [127]. The female must be able to manipulate the blend ratio that she releases in order to be able to attract males with a subset of compounds that are otherwise shared by both males and females. In field trials, dose also appeared to be important, with doses in the low microgram range remaining attractive to males for several days [127]. [Pg.88]

Another potentially important fermentation is that producing butyric acid. The process is used industrially on only a small scale at present and details have not been disclosed. Many derivatives of butyric acid are used industrially the benzyl, methyl, octyl and terpenyl esters are used in the perfumery and essence trade and amyl butyrate, bornyl and isobornyl butyrates have been described as plasticizers for cellulose esters. Moreover vinyl butyrate is a possible ingredient of polymerizable materials. The mixed acetic and butyric acid esters of polysaccharides are also coming into favor. Cellulose acetate butyrate is marketed as an ingredient of lacquer and is less inflammable than the pure acetate. Dextran (see below) acetate butyrate may have similar uses. [Pg.324]

Ethyl alcohol has been made by the hydration of ethylene (9) since 1930. Like isopropyl alcohol, part of the output is used as a solvent, but most is converted to other oxygenated chemicals. Its most important raw material use is conversion to acetaldehyde by catalytic air oxidation. Acetaldehyde, in turn, is the raw material source of acetic acid, acetic anhydride, pentaerythritol, synthetic n-butyl alcohol (via aldol condensation), butyraldehyde, and other products. Butyraldehyde is the source of butyric acid, polyvinyl butyral resin, and 2-ethylhexanol (octyl alcohol). The last-named eight-carbon alcohol is based on the aldol condensation of butyraldehyde and is used to make the important plasticizer di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate. A few examples of the important reactions of acetaldehyde are as follows ... [Pg.294]

Among important products manufactured in this manner are substituted propionaldehyde from corresponding substituted ethylene, normal and rso-butyr aldehyde from propylene, iso-octyl alcohol from heptene, and trimethylhexyl alcohol from di-isobutylene. [Pg.628]

Having a spectroscopic polarity index Et = 0.426, furfural is of intermediate polarity, and on account of this property, furfural is infinitely miscible with other solvents of intermediate polarity, up to Et values of about 0.790, and down to Et values of about 0.099. At 25 °C, this infinite miscibility with furfural includes, in alphabetical order, acetic acid, acetone, benzene, butanol, butyric acid, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethylene glycol, formic acid, octyl alcohol, oleic acid, propionic acid, pyridine, quinoline, and toluene. [Pg.317]

Although ethanol is dehydrogenated to acetaldehyde in the presence of zinc oxide at temperatures of 300° to 400° C. and atmospheric pressure, no aldehyde results when the reaction is conducted under sufficient hydrogen pressure. Instead a complex mixture including esters of acetic, butyric, and caproic acids and alcohols up to and higher than octyl is formed.01 Condensation reactions of acetaldehyde are used to account for the formation of these compounds but no definite proof has as yet been advanced to establish the mechanisms. [Pg.55]
