Warning signals

There are certain warning signals while drilling which, if analyzed properly, can lead to early detection of formation fluid entry into the wellbore. 

If the kick is gained while tripping, the only warning signal we have is an increase in fluid volume at the surface (pit gain). Once it is determined that the pressure overbalance is lost, the well must be closed as quickly as possible. The sequence of operations involved in closing the well is as follows ... 

A gas-cut mud is a warning signal of possible formation fluid influx, although it is not necessarily a serious problem. Due to gas expandibility, it usually gives the appearance of being a more serious problem than it actually is.

Wildlife indicators can establish baseline conditions, act as early warning signals of environmental problems, identify the extent of contamination, define critical pathways and responses at multiple trophic levels, as well as integrate biological exposure with the physical and chemical environment (Farrington 1991). Patients with skin cancer generally present with a lesion that may be located anywhere on the body. The most common sites are the head, neck, trunk, and extremities. Changes in any characteristics of a lesion are important danger warning signals. Abnormal presentations of a mole/lesion indicate the need for further assessment.

The interesting m-menthadienol (3S)-l-methyl-5-(l-hydroxy-l-methyl-ethyl)-l,3-cyclohexadiene 253, is produced by Ips sexdentatus, boring under stress in 3-carene-rich, highly resinous pine trees and possibly released as a kind of warning signal to conspecifics to keep off [463]. 

A second warning signal, which applies to any three (or more) site systems, is the nonadditivity of the triplet correlations. Again, based on the normal behavior of the direct correlations in Eq. (5.4.1), one expects similar behavior from the total correlation, and writes... 

Have possible warning signals been ignored ... 

The probability of correct data to be outside the warning limits is 4.5%. This is a reasonably high probability. Therefore such values should only give a warning signal and no immediate action is required. 

Acute pain is a warning signal and it is necessary to take a medical history and make the appropriate investigations to make a diagnosis and to give causal treatment. In pain of a more chronic nature an analysis of the origin of the pain and its character must be made in order to give the correct treatment (Table 1). 

A 0.5% incidence of migraines has been reported among users of oral contraceptives. Migraine headaches may be a warning signal for an oncoming stroke, and immediate discontinuation of oral contraceptive use is recommended. 

In many companies there is an intrinsic lack of understanding between business development and R D. To supplement depot medication, oral preparations can be used when early warning signals of an impending relapse occur because the pharmacokinetics of depot preparations require months to reach steady-state (see also Pharmacokinetics/Plasma Levels later in this chapter). By contrast, oral administration brings about an altered steady state in several days. We recommend treating most patients with the minimally effective dose to avoid more serious adverse effects, even at the cost of a few more relapses, provided this strategy does not lead to rehospitalization or produce serious impairment in functioning.
