Application of Separation Methods

The possible use of one or the other separation method is dependent on the chromatography data system that is used. Not all systems provide the full variety of methods. Which method is used, however, is often decided by the analyst and his feeling.  [Pg.288]


Although the removal of interfering substances is an important application of separation methods, this chapter is more concerned with the use of these procedures to isolate, identify or quantify a particular substance or group of substances in the presence of other very similar substances. The Rijnmond area is that part of the Rhine delta between Rotterdam and the North Sea. The Commission for the Safety of the Population at large (COVO) commissioned the study for six chemicals and the operations associated with them acrylonitrile, liquid ammonia, liquid chlorine, LNG, propylene, and part of a separation process (diethanolamine stripper of a hydrodesulfurizer). Capital investments can also be selected on the basis of other measures of performance such as return on investment, internal rate of return, and benefit-cost ratio (or savings-to-investment ratio). Pioneering work on the desulphonylation of jS-ketosulphones was carried out by Corey and Chaykovsky - . This reaction was part of a sequence which could be used in the synthesis of ketones, as shown in equation (53). The main thrust of this work was in the use of sulphoxides, but Corey did stress the merits of both sulphones and sulphonamides for different applications of this type of reaction. The method soon found application by Stetter and Hesse for the synthesis of 3-methyl-2,4-dioxa-adamantane , and by House and Larson in an ingenious synthesis of intermediates directed towards the gibberellin skeleton, and also for more standard applications . Before collecting data, at least two lean/rich cycles of 15-min lean and 5-min rich were completed for the given reaction condition. These cycle times were chosen so as the effluent from all reactors reached steady state. Most of the continuously monitored water contaminants are determined via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, an adequate separation of polar compounds via GC typically requires derivatization of the polar moieties (e.g., BSTFA derivatives). In addition to this, as the analyte groups show different properties concerning the number and kind of functional groups, it is quite difficult to develop a universal derivatization procedure suitable for all the target analytes. Furthermore, the presence in wastewater of many other organic compounds requires the use of labeled standards, which can make application of this method unfeasible [35]. [Pg.59]
