Continuous monitoring of waters

Continuous monitoring of water, soil and sediment is essential in order to identify the most critical/at-risk parts of the overall system and to convert negative trends into positive ones. Measures to remove negative trends can be taken at the level of the production process (e.g. clean technologies), at product level (e.g. clean products), at the end-of-the-pipe (waste and wastewater treatment) and at the consumer level. The continuous monitoring of water quality, water level and upstream fish movement commenced at Duddon Hall on the River Duddon in April 1983 and at Cropple How on the River Esk in May 1983. The monitors took measurements at guarter hour intervals of pH, river level, electrical conductivity, temperature and upstream fish movement. All readings were recorded on a solid state data logger. Sensors were calibrated at three week intervals.
