Various other properties intestinal antiseptic (932, 933), fungicide (934, 935), insecticide (895. 898), coccidiostatic activity (936), car-cinolytic activity (937), radioprotective activity (938), antimutagenic activity (939, 940). 

Vanillin has been reported to be a bio antimutagen, demonstrating the abiUty to protect against mutagenic effects by enhancement of an error-free post-rephcation repair pathway. Vanillin has been reported to be nonmutagenic in bacterial systems, but conflicting results in mammalian systems leave no clear indication of the SCE-inducing potential of vanillin.

There are numerous other polyphenolic compounds possessing in vitro and in vivo antioxidative activity. Several examples of these compounds are cited below. One of nonflavonoid polyphenols of particular interest is resveratrol (3,5,4 -trihydroxy-Znmv-stilbcne, Figure 29.8), which has been identified as a potential cancer chemopreventive agent and an antimutagen [182].
