Hordeumin, a purple anthocyanin-tannin pigment, was extracted from barley bran-fermented broth and was shown to scavenge superoxide radicals in a concentration-dependent manner. Hordeumin had also an antimutagenicity effect [71,72]. Endothelial cells enriched with elderberry anthocyanins exhibited significant protective effects against oxidative stressors such as hydrogen peroxide, 2,2/-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride, and iron(II) sulfate/ascorbic acid [55]. [Pg.59]

Hydrazine is mutagenic in several Salmonella models as well as in an H. influenza model. However, the H. influenza model, hydrazine was postulated to have both mutagen and antimutagen effects. [Pg.1348]

There is evidence to suggest that benz[a]anthracene may serve as an anticarcinogen when administered with benzo[a]pyrene. Coadministration of benz[a]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene decreased benzo[a]pyrene metabolism, benzo[a]pyrene-DNA adduct formation, and reduced the mutagenic activity of benzo[a]pyrene on hamster embryo cells. It has been postulated that the antimutagenic effect of benz[a]anthracene results from competition with benzo[a]pyrene for MFO enzymes, rather than the induction of detoxifying enzymes (Smolarek et al. 1986). [Pg.187]

As we have seen in the last paragraph, various tests revealed that some quinones can have an antimutagenic effect, and thus that they could have some potential as anticancer agents. Symbols El, antimutagenic effect on IQ (A) and I, that on Trp-p-1 (B). Control means the absence of the test compounds. The abbreviations Meth, Eth, n-Pro, and n-But denote methoxymethylene, ethoxymethylene, n-propoxymethylene, and n-butoxymethylene derivatives of 3-(alkoxy)methylene-2-thioxopyrrolidines shown in Table 5. Salmonella typhimurium TA98 was simultaneously treated with IQ (0.5 pg), Trp-p-1 (0.5 pg), and the test compounds (HMTP 130-520 pg/ml other compounds 500 pg/ml) in the presence of S9-mix for 20 min at 37° C. After 48 h incubation, the bacterial survivors and revert-ants were counted, and ratios of the numbers of revertants against those of the survivors were calculated. The ratio obtained from the control (treated with only IQ or Trp-p-1) is defined as 100% mutagenicity. A statistically significant difference between the control and the treating was determined by t-test ( (p < 0.05) and (p < 0.01). [Pg.1100]

The antimutagenic effects of ajoene were investigated by the Ames test. Ajoene inhibited mutagenesis induced by both benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) and 4-nitro-l,2-phenylenediamine (NPD) in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, NPD-induced mutagenesis was more effectively suppressed by ajoene than the B[a]P-induced type. Furthermore, the inhibition of mutagenesis by ajoene was more effective for transition-type mutations than for the frame shift type. HPLC analysis of B[a]P metabolism in the presence of the rat liver microsomal fraction (S-9) showed that ajoene dose-dependently inhibited the metabolic activation of B[a]P which suggests that ajoene affected the metabolic enzymes in the S-9 fraction [100]. [Pg.475]
