And humane engineering

The ID function involves a great deal more than appearance design. The designer is often called on to create the very concept of the product. In doing so, they will consider the utility, cost, innovation and human engineering aspects of the proposed product that relates to its basic appeal to the end-user. [Pg.17]

The method of Dantzig and Johnson et al. marked a breakthrough, both in the time required to solve chemical composition problems and in the complexity of problems that could be handled. Their method constituted the first version of what has become RAND s chemical composition program. Subsequently, refinements have been made in numerical techniques and human engineering, resulting in the present program. RAND mathematicians, notably H. E. Kanter, R. J. Clasen, N. Z. Shapiro, M. Shapley, and L. Cutler, have developed programs to simulate steady—state systems and certain types of transients. (See References for a full list of contributors... [Pg.224]

Anthropometries involves the quantitative descriptions and measurements of the physical body variations in people. These metrics are useful in human factors design and human engineering. System designs that do not appropriately account for anthropometric considerations can often lead to safety problems. [Pg.27]

HMI is the human to machine interface in a system. It is the operator interface or UI, which in modern systems is typically a computer screen with computer input-output controls for the operator. HMI is also the application of human factors and human engineering to system design to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the system throughout its life cycle. Since personnel are a major component of any system, special design consideration must be given to human performance. HMI is also sometimes referred to as MMI. HMI is identical to the more recent term HSI. [Pg.210]

Ozone, known for its beneficial role as a protective screen against ultraviolet radiation in the stratosphere, is a major pollutant at low altitudes (from 0 to 2000 m) affecting plants, animals and human beings. Ozone can be formed by a succession of photochemical reactions that preferentially involve hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides emitted by the different combustion systems such as engines and furnaces. [Pg.261]

The major classes of organic compounds common to living systems are lipids pro terns nucleic acids and carbohydrates Carbohydrates are very familiar to us— we call many of them sugars They make up a substantial portion of the food we eat and provide most of the energy that keeps the human engine running Carbohy drates are structural components of the walls of plant cells and the wood of trees Genetic information is stored and transferred by way of nucleic acids specialized derivatives of carbohydrates which we 11 examine m more detail m Chapter 28... [Pg.1026]

Site characterization studies include a surface-based testing program, potential environmental impact, and societal aspects of the repository. Performance assessment considers both the engineered barriers and the geologic environment. Among features being studied are the normal water flow, some release of carbon-14, and abnormal events such as volcanic activity and human intmsion. The expected date for operation of the repository is 2013. [Pg.230]

Despite the lack of interest in human factors issues in the CPI in the past, the situation is now changing. In 1985, Trevor Kletz published his landmark book on human error in the CPI An Engineer s View of Human Error (revised in 1991). Several other books by the same author e.g., Kletz (1994b) have also addressed the issue of human factors in case studies. Two other publications have also been concerned specifically with human factors in the process industry Lorenzo (1990) was commissioned by the Chemical Manufacturers Association in the USA, and Mill (1992), published by the U.K. Institution of Chemical Engineers. In 1992, CCPS and other organizations sponsored a conference on Human Factors and Human Reliability in Process Safety (CCPS, 1992c). This was further evidence of the growing interest in the topic within the CPI. [Pg.12]
