NaturaHy occurring and synthetic estrogens and androgens have been extensively and safely used to improve efficiency and carcass composition ia growing beef catde in the United States since the early 1950s. Several anaboHc steroid implants have been approved for use in beef catde in the United States, but only one, zeranol [55331-29-8] is approved for use in lambs. Anabolic steroids are not used for growth regulation in swine or poultry (see Steroids).

The pharmaceutical industry has developed and studied a number of anabolic steroids for use in veterinary medicine and in rehabilitation from injuries that are accompanied by deterioration of muscles. The ideal agent would be one that possessed the anabolic properties of testosterone without its androgenic (masculinizing) effects. Methandrostenolone (Dianabol) and stanozolol are among the many synthetic anabolic steroids that require a prescription.

Steroids represent another typical class of doping substances. The determination of endogenous steroids (e.g., testosterone), synthetic anabolic steroids, their esters and their conjugates, and corticosteroids by HPLC-MS has been recently object of an exhaustive review [115] and will not be further discussed here. 

Several synthetic steroids have been synthesized in an effort to investigate their physiological effects. Prednisone is an example of a synthetic drug. The oral contraceptives and anabolic steroids are the best known of all steroids. 

Steroids that aid in muscle development are called anabolic steroids. They are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, thus have the same muscle-building effect as testosterone. There are more than 100 different anabolic steroids which, vary in structure, duration of action, relative effects and toxicities. Androstenedione, stanozolol and dianabol are anabolic steroids. They are used to treat people suffering from traumas accompanied by muscle deterioration. The use of anabolic steroid can lead to a number of dangerous side-effects, including lowered levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol, which benefits the heart, and elevated levels of harmful low density lipoprotein, stimulation of prostate tumours, clotting disorders and liver problems.

Some biochemical natural products have caused cardiotoxicity. Synthetic estrogens and progestins have been linked to cardiovascular disorders in women taking them for contraceptive purposes. Various animal and insect venoms and plant alkaloids may have adverse cardiovascular effects. There is some evidence to suggest that anabolic steroids, commonly linked to scandals involving athletes who take them to enhance performance, have caused cardiovascular disorders. 

Oral contraceptives and anabolic steroids are examples of synthetic steroids. 

Sampling is carried out at the time of competition and has enabled the misuser to switch from using a preferred synthetic anabolic steroid to testosterone in sufficient time to escape detection. 

Synthetic anabolic steroids used in man may be readily detected by use of two radioimmunoassay kits which are available, one for nandrolone and one for 17a-methyl substituted anabolic steroids (see Reagent Appendix). 

Chemical modifications of testosterone have led to some synthetic compounds which show a satisfactory dissociation between anabolic and androgenic properties. Many attempts have also been made to find orally active anabolic steroids without androgenic activity since orally active compounds would have a much greater clinical application than intramuscularly administered drugs.

Benign liver tumours may develop when synthetic C17-a-substituted gonadal steroids (e.g. anabolic steroids usually in high dose, and oral contraceptives) are used for more than 5 years there is also increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, although the absolute risk of either complication is very low. These liver tumours are highly vascular and may cause recurrent or acute abdominal pain if they rupture and bleed. 

Selectivity. Many synthetic analogues, although classed as, e.g. androgen, anabolic steroid, progestogen, are nonselective and bind to several types of receptor as agonist, partial agonist, antagonist. 

In addition to the many hundreds of steroids isolated from plants and animals, thousands more have been synthesized in pharmaceutical laboratories in a search for new drugs. Among the best-known synthetic steroids are the oral contraceptives and anabolic agents. Most birth-control pills are a mixture of two compounds, a synthetic estrogen, such as ethynylestradiol, and a synthetic progestin, such as norethindrone. Anabolic steroids, such as stanozolol and methandrostenolone (Dianabol), are synthetic androgens that mimic the tissue-building effects of natural testosterone. 

The male sex hormone. Anabolic steroids are basically synthetic versions of testosterone.
