Androgenic activity

A number of studies were conducted in order to try and create a drug with high-androgenic and low-anabolic potential however, most attempts were unsuccessful. Because they are structurally similar to testosterone, they exhibit both androgenic and anabolic activity, and are frequently used by athletes for building up muscle mass. At the same time, all of the anabolics currently used have androgenic activity. 

Danazol Synthetic androgen. Suppresses gonadotrophin production. Exhibits some weak androgenic activity Oral administration in the treatment of endometriosis, benign breast disorders, menorrhagia, premenstrual syndrome and hereditary angioedema... 

Danazol is an isoxazole derivative of 17alpha-ethinyl testosterone. It has weak androgenic activity. It inhibits gonadotrophin secretion and is used to suppress ovarian function. It induces endometrial atrophy and has found its major use in the management of endometriosis. Gestrinon has the same indication and acts via a similar mechanism. Danazol has also been used in the management of benign breast disorders such as fibrocystic disease. 

The basic structure of all steroid hormones is similar (see Chapter 60, Fig. 60.4). The addition of a hydrogen atom at position 5 and an angular methyl group at positions 18 and 19 establishes the basic chemical framework for androgenic activity.
