To address its task, the committee held four public sessions in which it heard presentations from officials of EPA s Office of Research and Development CDC s National Center for Environmental Health, National Center for Health Statistics, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health the Washington State Department of Health the International Life Sciences biomonitoring committee the American Chemistry Council Crop-Life America the Association of Public Health Laboratories Environmental Defense and academe. 

A number of private organizations fund biomonitoring programs for research purposes and to assess exposure at the individual level. The efforts of the American Chemistry Council s Long-Range Research Initiative, the International Life Sciences Institute Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (ILSI-HESI) Biomonitoring Technical Committee, and private laboratories that cater to individual requests to biomonitor for chemicals are highlighted below.

For the publication of original matter and occasional reviews, some papers in dairy chemistry, but not very many, appear in American Chemical Society journals, as also in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, The main publication in the field in this country is the Journal of Dairy Science, Qi the American Dairy Science Association. This, however, covers a very much broader field than chemistry. The Journal of Milk and Food Technology, which is the official organ of the International Association of Milk and Food Sanitarians, is primarily concerned with papers of public health interest. The Journal of the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists contains some reports on analytical methods appertaining to the dairy field. There are also numerous trade magazines in which scientific and technical articles appear from time to time. 

The author s work in organocopper chemistry has been made possible by the generous support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the American Chemical Society-Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Good is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, a past president of the American Chemical Society, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Institute of Chemists and the Royal Society of Chemistry. She has been active on the boards of directors of such groups as the Industrial Research Institute, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and the National Institute for Petroleum and Energy Research. She has also served on advisory panels for the National Research Council, the National Bureau of Standards, the National Science Foundation Chemistry Section, the National Institutes of Health, and NASA, and on the executive committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

Industrial competitiveness relies on leadership in science. Increasingly, start-up companies exploit scientific discoveries made at universities with federal support. Technology transfer from universities to industry has been facilitated by the Bayh-Dole Act. New companies are continually being started to exploit innovations from biotechnology and nanoscience chemists are often crucial players in these discoveries and new ventures. President Bush s American Competitiveness Initiative proposal, which calls for a large increase in support for research in the physical sciences and for science and math education, could have a major impact on the health of chemistry research in the United States.
