Alkaline paint strippers

Alkaline paint strippers (e.g., alkali-metal hydroxides, sodium carbonate, sodium metasilicate, trisodium phosphate) can be manufactured in liquid, paste, or powder form. They are only suitable for removing hydrolyzable coating materials (e.g., alkyd resins and oil paints). Alkaline paint strippers may also be used to remove coalings on facades. Tests should be carried out to check that the coating is hydrolyzable.

Furfuryl alcohol is used as a viscosity reducer for epoxy formulations. The addition of furfuryl alcohol to urea-formaldehyde resins improves the craze resistance and heat stability of the adhesives. Furfuryl alcohol serves as an effective wetting agent and solvent for phenolic resins in the manufacture of phenolic resin abrasive grinding wheels. Other miscellaneous uses of furfuryl alcohol include use in alkaline paint strippers and cleaning formulations, as a solvent and carrier for dyes in textile printing, and as a chemical intermediate.

Gluconates and glucoheptonates are essential components of many alkaline rust removers and cleaners, paint strippers, and etchants. They frequently cause complexation of dissolved heavy metals such as copper, nickel, and zinc. Conventional sodium hydroxide treatment does not result in sufficient precipitation of these complexed metals to meet EPA standards. In tests performed by Srinivasan (1983), the use of lime or calcium hydroxide proved far better. In particular, lime treatment resulted in more metal removal, better flocculation and faster sludge settling, and could also be used in conjunction with sodium hydroxide treatment. 

Use Pharmaceutical and food products, cleaning and pickling metals, sequestrant, cleansers for bottle washing, paint strippers, alkaline derusters, catalyst in textile printing (ammonium salt). 

Neutral paint strippers include halogen-free organic solvents (e.g., glycols, glycol ethers, l-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone) which are generally used at 20-40°C. In contrast to the alkaline paint removers, neutral paint strippers result in purely physical dissolution of the paint from the substrate. Their use is therefore restricted to removing physically drying paints. 

Paint strippers used to remove coatings from wood and mineral substrates may be either alkaline or based on organic solvents.
