Resistance to antimicrobial agents is of concern as it is well known that bacterial resistance to antibiotics can develop. Many bacteria already derive some nonspecific resistance to biocides through morphological features such as thek cell wall. Bacterial populations present as part of a biofilm have achieved additional resistance owkig to the more complex and thicker nature of the biofilm. A system contaminated with a biofilm population can requke several orders of magnitude more chlorine to achieve control than unassociated bacteria of the same species. Papermaking additives can be categorized either as process additives or as functional additives. Process additives are materials that improve the operation of the paper machine, such as retention and drainage aids, biocides, dispersants, and defoamers they are primarily added at the wet end of the paper machine. Monofunctional, cyclohexylamine is used as a polyamide polymerization chain terminator to control polymer molecular weight. 3,3,5-Trimethylcyclohexylamines ate usehil fuel additives, corrosion inhibitors, and biocides (50). Dicyclohexylamine has direct uses as a solvent for cephalosporin antibiotic production, as a corrosion inhibitor, and as a fuel oil additive, in addition to serving as an organic intermediate. Tackifiers are used to increase the tackiness and the setting speed of adhesives. They increase tackiness by softening the poly(vinyl acetate) polymer in the wet and the dry adhesive film. Tackifiers are usually rosin or its derivatives or phenoHc resins. Other additives frequently needed for specific apphcation and service conditions are antifoams, biocides, wetting agents, and humectants. [Pg.470]

Chlorine is desirable as a bulk pretreatment biocide for inlet water, but its subsequent removal upstream of the membrane is absolutely necessary ana difficult. NaHSO,3 is a common additive to dechlorinate before membranes. It is customarily added at 3-5 mg/1, an excess over the stoichiometric requirement. NH3 is sometimes added to convert the chlorine to chloramine, a much less damaging biocide. Heavy metals present in seawater seem to amplify the damaging effects of chlorine and other oxidants. [Pg.2036]

Metalworking fluids contain mineral oils (refer to p. 80) or synthetic lubricants they are used neat or in admixture with water. They may contain small amounts of biocides, stabilizers, emulsifiers, coiTosion inhibitors, fragrances and extreme pressure additives. The formulations render them suitable for application to metal being worked, generally from a recirculatory system, to provide lubrication, corrosion protection, swarf removal and cooling of the tool and machined surface. [Pg.131]
