Each segment of the insulated wire and cable industry has its own set of standards, and cables are built to conform to specifications provided by a large variety of technical associations such as The Institute of Electrical Electronic Engineers (IEEE), The Insulated Cable Engineers Association, (ICEA), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Rural Electrification Administration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (REA), Association of Edison Illumination Companies (AEIC), MiUtary Specifications of the Department of Defense (MIL), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), National Electrical Code (NEC), etc. [Pg.322]

The ratings and sizes of main components and cables can be selected from manufacturers catalogues. But cables required for the switchgear internal control and power wirings, being typical of all, are normally identified by their cross-sectional area rather than the current ratings. We have therefore piovided the technical data and current ratings for the most common sizes of such cables for a ready reference in Table 13.15. [Pg.372]

Fire risk assessment is made in order to determine the overall value of decreasing fire hazard in a particular scenario. The level of fire risk that is acceptable for a situation is, normally, a societal, and not a technical, decision. Therefore, fire hazard assessments are generally more common than fire risk assessments. The NFPA Research Foundation has undertaken a project to develop a methodology for fire risk assessment. It has done this by studying four cases in detail upholstered furniture in residential environments, wire and cable in concealed spaces in hotels and motels, floor coverings in offices and wall coverings in restaurants. [Pg.475]

Table 3.12 summarizes IEC members and associates. Within the IEC, technical committees and subcommittees are involved in standardization work covering all aspects of electrical engineering, e.g. insulating materials, semiconductors, wires and cables, lamps, motors, generators, transformers, and, of special interest, electrical apparatus for explosive atmospheres. This is the responsibility of Technical Committee TC 31 and eight subcommittees (see Table 3.13). Table 3.14 gives a survey of IEC documents and standards covering the field of explosion protection of electrical apparatus. [Pg.85]

Technical limitations to their use have been opacity and sulfur staining. Their cumulative toxicity has been mainly a concern for worker exposure. Apart from wire and cable, their use has been restricted to PVC-U applications in Europe and Asia. North America has never accepted lead compounds in PVC-U applications, preferring the use of organotins. This will be covered later in this chapter. [Pg.14]

Electro-insulation materials. The retention of dielectric properties in a high-temperature environment, coupled with good corrosion resistance in contact with certain reactive chemicals, suggests excellent possibilities of polybenzimidazole use in electrical insulation and other dielectric applications at high operating temperatures and/or in aggressive chemical environments. Typical applications, hence, can be foimd in special cable and wire insulation, in the manufacture of circuit boards and radomes for supersonic aircraft, as battery and electrolytic cell separators, and as fuel cell frame structural materials. Some recent publications in the patent and technical report literature may serve to illustrate such applications. [Pg.35]

The systems engineer provides layouts of cable runs and connections to the architect. Such detailed documentation simplifies equipment installation and facilitates future changes in the system. During preparation of final construction documents, the architect and the systems engineer can firm up the layout of the technical equipment wire ways, including access to flooring, conduits, trenches, and overhead wire ways. [Pg.2356]

These two properties are covered together because they are related from a technical standpoint. The vast majority of polymers are excellent thermal and electrical insulators. Outstanding electrical insulation leads to extensive use in wire and cable insulation as well as numerous other applications. Although a few polymers are intrinsic conductors of electricity, for most polymers, conductivity must be induced through the use of conductive fillers. Similarly, plastics are superior thermal insulators and even more so when foamed. There are applications where plastic with exceptionally high thermal conductivity is required. One notable example is heat sinks for laptop computers. Plastics allow complex, efficient shapes that fit within the strict confines of a laptop and when appropriate fillers are added. High thermal conductivity and performance that rivals metals is attainable. [Pg.523]
