Vulcanized polyethylene

At this point in the process, thermoplastic and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) membranes are complete and are ready for packaging. In the case of ethylene—propylene—diene monomer (EPDM), the curing step occurs before the membrane is ready for packaging. The curing process is accomphshed by placing the membrane in a large vulcanizer where the material is heated under pressure to complete the cure. [Pg.213]

Other Accelerators. Amine isophthalate and thiazolidine thione, which are used as alternatives to thioureas for cross-linking polychloroprene (Neoprene) and other chlorine-containing polymers, are also used as accelerators. A few free amines are used as accelerators of sulfur vulcanization these have high molecular weight to minimize volatility and workplace exposure. Several amines and amine salts are used to speed up the dimercapto thiadiazole cure of chlorinated polyethylene and polyacrylates. Sulfurized olefins (S2CI2 plus isobutene) are further reacted with S and Na2S to give products useful as extreme pressure lubricant additives (144,145). The reaction of unsaturated natural oils with sulfur monochloride gives resinous products known as Factice, which are useful as art-gum erasers and mbber additives (146,147). The addition reaction of sulfur monochloride with unsaturated polymers, eg, natural mbber, produces cross-links and thus serves as a means for vulcanizing mbber at moderate temperatures. The photochemical cross-linking of polyethylene has also been reported (148). [Pg.138]

Covers for the battery designs in Figures 1 and 2 are typically molded from materials identical to that of the respective case, and vent plugs are frequentiy made of molded polypropylene. Other combinations are possible, eg, containers molded of polyethylene or polypropylene may be mated with covers of high impact mbber for use in industrial batteries. After the cover is fitted over the terminal post, it is sealed onto the case. The cover is heat bonded to the case, if it is plastic it is sealed with an epoxy resin or other adhesive, if it is vulcanized mbber. Vent caps are usually inserted into the cover s acid fiU holes to faciHtate water addition and safety vent gasses, except for nonaccessible maintenance-free or recombinant batteries. Po[yamine disulphides do not inhibit peroxide vulcanization of polyethylene, are stable in air up to 300-350°C, exhibit good compatibility and show no sweating out from the polyethylene mass. Based on this analysis it is evident that materials which are biaxially oriented will have good puncture resistance. Highly polar polymers would be resistant to puncture failure because of their tendency to increase in strength when stretched. The addition of randomly dispersed fibrous filler will also add resistance to puncture loads. From some examples such as oriented polyethylene glycol terephthalate (Mylar), vulcanized fiber, and oriented nylon, it is evident that these materials meet one or more of the conditions reviewed. Products and plastics that meet with puncture loading conditions in applications can be reinforced against this type of stress by use of a surface layer of plastic with good puncture resistance. Resistance of the surface layer to puncture will protect the product from puncture loads. An example of this type of application is the addition of an oriented PS layer to foam cups to improve their performance. [Pg.94]

When two polymers interact or react with each other, they are likely to provide a compatible, even a miscible, blend. Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) interacts with chloro-sulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) forming partially miscible and miscible blends, respectively, due to the reaction between chlorosulfonic acid group and chlorine with epoxy group of ENR. Chiu et al. have studied the blends of chlorinated polyethylene (CR) with ENR at blend ratios of 75 25, 50 50, and 25 75, as well as pure rubbers using sulfur (Sg), 2-mercapto-benzothiazole, and 2-benzothiazole disulfide as vulcanizing agents [32]. The dithiocarbamates have the pentacoordinate binuclear structure (44). Substitute for Conventional Vulcanized Rubbers, For this application, the products are processed by techniques and equipment developed for conventional thermoplastics, ie, injection molding, extrusion, etc. The S—B—S and S—EB—S polymers are preferred (small amounts of S—EP—S are also used). To obtain a satisfactory balance of properties, they must be compounded with oils, fillers, or other polymers compounding reduces costs. Compounding ingredients and their effects on properties are given in Table 8. Oils with high aromatic content should be avoided because they plasticize the polystyrene domains. Polystyrene is often used as an ingredient in S—B—S-based compounds it makes the products harder and improves their processibility. Kuwata and co-workers treated a film of a copolymer of styrene and butadiene with an aluminium-ether complex and ethylenedichloride (79). Afterwards they allowed the film to react with trimethylamine. Another technique is the grafting of e.g. a polyethylene film with styrene (28). [Pg.313]
