Benzothiazoles disulfides

When two polymers interact or react with each other, they are likely to provide a compatible, even a miscible, blend. Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) interacts with chloro-sulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) forming partially miscible and miscible blends, respectively, due to the reaction between chlorosulfonic acid group and chlorine with epoxy group of ENR. Chiu et al. have studied the blends of chlorinated polyethylene (CR) with ENR at blend ratios of 75 25, 50 50, and 25 75, as well as pure rubbers using sulfur (Sg), 2-mercapto-benzothiazole, and 2-benzothiazole disulfide as vulcanizing agents [32]. The vulcanization accelerators include the thiazole 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) (169), and its derivative benzothiazole disulfide (dibenzoythiazyl disulfide, 2,2 -dithiobis (benzothiazole), MBTS) (170). Organic accelerators enable reduction in time of vulcanization, more effective use of sulfur in formation of cross-links and use of low processing temperatures. MBTS delays vulcanization, when compared with MBT alone. They are used in production of conveyor belts, footware, etc. The 2-mercaptobenzothiazole zinc salt (MBTZ) (171) is also important, and is used in latex products. Other sulfur donors include 2-morpholinodithiobenzothiazole, 2-(4-morpholinyldithio)benzothiazole (MBSS, MORFAX) (172). 

A thermally labile phosphonium salt intermediate (6) was obtained as an oil in the reaction of di-2-benzothiazole disulfide (5). On warming to 80° this was converted into di-2-benzothiazole sulfide (7).
