Vitamine 1830 INDEX

Treatment of pregnant women with warfarin can lead to fetal bone abnormalities (fetal warfarin syndrome). Two proteins are present in bone that contain y-carboxygluta-mate, osteocalcin and bone matrix Gla protein. Osteocalcin also contains hydroxyproHne, so its synthesis is dependent on both vitamins K and C in addition, its synthesis is induced by vitamin D. The release into the circulation of osteocalcin provides an index of vitamin D stams. [Pg.488]

Reports of lead-nutrient interactions in experimental animals have generally described such relationships in terms of a single nutrient, using relative absorption or tissue retention in the animal to index the effect. Most of the data are concerned with the impact of dietary levels of calcium, iron, phosphorus, and vitamin D. These interaction studies are summarized in Table 2-12. [Pg.325]

Other Substances. Several other index substances (W8), such as carotene, have been used by various workers in this field. There does not seem to be any particular advantage in these other methods. The use of one good water-soluble index substance, such as xylose, and one fat-soluble index substance, such as I131 fat or vitamin A in oil, is sufficient for diagnostic purposes. [Pg.88]

The ability of the liver to act as a depot for vitamin Bi2 (B28, G13) enables us to use this vitamin as an index of proper hepatic function. Hepatic disorders lead to an increased Bi2-binding in the serum (J5, R3), suggesting that the blood assumes a greater role in the conservation of B12. We have reported that patients with liver disease excreted invariably less than 10 fig of Bi2> 8 hours after a 50-[ig intramuscular load dose of the vitamin. In contrast, normal subjects excreted 24-40 pg, i.e., 50-80% of the vitamin in the same test (B14). These results were correlated with various chemical determinations indicative of hepatic disorders (Bl). In Table 16 the clinical diagnosis and the various liver-... [Pg.233]

Compliance with the content uniformity requirements for vitamins and minerals in multivitamin-mineral combination products may be determined by measuring the distribution of a single index vitamin or a single index mineral present in the product. Fohc acid is the index vitamin when present in a multivitamin formulation. For formulations that do not contain folic acid, cyanocobalamin is the index vitamin. If neither fohc acid nor cyanocobalamin is present in the formulation, the index vitamin is vitamin D and in the absence of vitamin D, the index vitamin is vitamin A. If none of the above four vitamins is present in the formulation, the vitamin labeled in the lowest amount is used as the index for content uniformity. [Pg.411]

Multivitamin-Mineral Combination Dietary Supplements—Indexing of Vitamin and Minerals... [Pg.412]

In a typical multivitamin-mineral combination product consisting of 10-15 ingredients, it is neither practical nor necessary to require in vitro demonstration of each and every vitamin and mineral. Consequently, in a unique approach to establishing in vitro dissolution for multivitamin-mineral combination products, an index vitamin and an index mineral are identified as markers for dissolution. In an attempt to account for the many different permutations of vitamins and mineral combinations, a hierarchy of index vitamins and index minerals was arrived at and specified (5). Table 1 shows the hierarchy of index vitamins and minerals specified for demonstration of dissolution requirement in the nutritional supplements monographs in USP 25-NF20. [Pg.412]

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) was chosen as the number one index vitamin because among the so-called water-soluble vitamins, it is the least soluble in water. If riboflavin is demonstrated to dissolve within the specified time, it is assumed that all other water-soluble vitamins will have also... [Pg.412]

In view of the reported growing importance ascribed to folic acid deficiency in the prevention of various disease conditions, such as neural tube defects, megaloblastic anemia, colon cancer, and colorectal cancer, a dissolution requirement is specified for folic acid when it is present in multivitamin-mineral combination products. Currently, the dissolution standard required in the official articles of dietary supplements (including vitamin-mineral combination products) places folic acid outside the index vitamin hierarchy. Therefore, a mandatory dissolution test for folic acid is required that is independent of and in addition to the mandatory index vitamin test for multivitamin preparations containing folic acid. [Pg.413]

In contrast to the dissolution criteria used for water-soluble vitamins, the hierarchy for index minerals is based on their importance in public health. For example, iron was chosen as the number one index mineral because iron deficiency is the most prevalent condition in the United States and because iron is present in almost all the multivitamin-mineral combination products currently available on the... [Pg.413]

Forty healthy participants, 25 female and 15 males, aged 19-33 years with a body mass index between 18 and 24 kg/m took part in the study. Excluding criteria were smoking, current dental surgery, illness of the pharynx or the cavity of the mouth, malabsorption, long-time medication, use of a toothpaste with vitamin A during the last 2 months prior to the study, pregnancy, and metabolic diseases. [Pg.195]

A widespread method for determining the induction period for autoxidation of oils and fats consists of passing a continuous stream of air through the heated sample and collecting the volatile acids evolved in a water trap, where they are determined on a real time basis. The time plot usually presents a flat appearance for a certain period and then takes off in an accelerated manner. This test is the basis of several national and international standards (e.g. AOCS Cd 12b-92—oil stability index" ISO 6886—accelerated oxidation test for oxidative stability of fats and oils ) and the design of the Rancimat equipment, where the end determination is based on conductivity measurements . In addition to oxidation stability as determined by the Rancimat method and POV, which negatively affects virgin olive oil stability, other nonstandard properties were proposed for better assessment of the quality of this oil, namely LC determination of Vitamin E (21), colorimetric determination of total polar phenols and UVD of total chlorophyll. ... [Pg.664]

The correlation between the TEARS assay and MDA dnring oxidation of edible oils may be complicated by the presence of tocopherols (e.g. Vitamin E, 21) . An evaluation was carried of MDA, determined by an independent method , and TEARS as indices for direct oxygen uptake of edible oils and unsatnrated fatty acids. The linear increase of MDA and TEARS with oxygen consumption of soybean oil, in a closed vessel at 170 °C, stops when the latter value reaches 500 p.molL, when both MDA and TEARS start to decrease on further O2 consumption. The same process carried out at 40 °C, using 2,2 -azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (171) as initiator, shows linearity up to 1500 p,molL O2 consumption . A similar behavior is observed for nnsatnrated fatty acids snch as oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids . On the other hand, depletion of Vitamin E (a-tocopherol, 21) and its analogs y- and 5-tocopherol (172, 173) present in the oil show a linear dependence on O2 consumption of the oil, np to 1800 p,molL . This points to the consumption of these antioxidants, and especially 21, as a good index for the O2 uptake in oils at high temperature. The determination of the tocopherols is carried ont by HPLC-FLD (Xex = 295 nm, Ah = 325 nm) . ... [Pg.668]
