During the course of the symposium, several dietary factors that can influence xenobiotic metabolism were discussed in detail. Here we will attempt t summarize in the broadest terms how various classic nutrient groups might exert an influence on xenobiotic metabolism. For convenience, the dietary groups have been broken into carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins and trace elements. It is difficult to take any one group individually, and it must be kept in mind that the interactions are continuous and extremely complicated. [Pg.14]

Fat-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E and K they are absorbed, transported, metabolised and stored along with fat. [Pg.26]

Water-soluble vitamins Fat-soluble vitamins Acting as a coenzyme Not acting as a coenzyme Vitamin-like agents... [Pg.48]

There is minimal tissue storage of water soluble vitamins in the body, therefore, water soluble vitamins are less likely to accumulate to toxic levels than are fat-soluble vitamins. In the case of an overdose of vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins are potentially more toxic than water-soluble vitamins. [Pg.233]

There are three main types of vitamins fat-soluble, carbohydrate-soluble and water-soluble. [Pg.255]

Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed by the intestinal tract following the same metabolism as used with fat. Any condition that interferes with the absorption of fats will also interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver, fatty tissues and muscle and remain in the body longer than water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are excreted slowly in urine. Hint to remember ADEK = addicted to fat are fat soluble vitamins. [Pg.164]

A vitamin is an organic compound essential to health that must be supplied in small amounts by the diet. Vitamins provide no energy and are unchanged by digestion. The body does not synthesize vitamins, but needs them to function as coenzymes. There are two kinds of vitamins, fat soluble and water soluble. [Pg.409]

Medium-chain fatty acids also improve the absorption of many other nutrients. The absorption of minerals (particularly calcium and magnesium), B vitamins, fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K and beta-carotene) and also amino acids has been foimd to increase when infants are fed a diet containing MCFA. In addition, coconut oil can be digested by the salivary lipase, getting absorbed very fast to give energy like carbohydrates. All other fats need the pancreatic lipase for digestion that the infants do not have (Murthi et al., 1987). [Pg.190]
