Ulex Europaeus Lectin

The expression of many endothelial markers including CD34, factor VIII, CD31, or Ulex europaeus lectin is fairly weak in normal vasculature, whereas it can become quite prominent in pathologic conditions such as chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carci-... [Pg.565]

Affinity chromatography has been used to purify Ulex europaeus lectin II.The lectin precipitates to different extents with blood group Ai, A2, B, H, Le , Le , and I precursor substances as well as with milk oligosaccharides. The maximum inhibition of the precipitin reaction occurs with H-specific oligosaccharide and to a lesser extent with the related oligosaccharide (8), 2 -< -Q -L-fucosyl-lactose, and oligomers of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose. [Pg.336]

Glycohybrid of peptido lactam 34 was developed using CuAAC reaction of sugar azide 33 with a-acetamido-a-propargyl-P-lactam 32 (Scheme 6.11). Glycohybrid 35, obtained from P-l-azido-L-fucose, was bound to Ulex Europaeus Lectin-1 (UEL-I) after conformational change around a rotatable triazolylmethylene moiety [27]. [Pg.165]

CD31 (54), Factor Vlll-related antigen (55), and CD34 (56) cannot often be demonstrated in poorly differentiated vascular tumors. The use of the lectin Ulex europaeus agglutinin 1 (UEA-1) (57) is a more sensitive method to detect endothelial cells. Like other lectins, however, UFA-1 reacts with many other cell types. [Pg.432]

It is well known that intestinal M cells have the ability to efficiently transcytose macromolecules and inert particles, which has stimulated researchers to target M cells for oral delivery of macromolecular drugs and particles.26,52 For example, Ulex europaeus 1 (UEAl), a lectin specific for a-L-fucose residues, selectively binds to mouse Peyer s patch M cells.56 It has become apparent that UEAl can be used to target macromolecules to mouse Peyer s patch M cells and to enhance macromolecular... [Pg.313]

In the same study, intravenous injection of Ulex europaeus 1 lectin microspheres were shown to be specifically taken up by lung endothelial cells and rapidly underwent migration into the extravascular tissues and into the airspace within 5-10 minutes after injection, with 90% of the injected dose being identified in the lung. Intratracheal administration of heparin nanospheres of 200 to 800-nm diameter containing iron oxide (Fe304) and ionic iron (Fe3+) to pentobarbital-anesthetized adult male CBA/J mice indicated a very similar deposition profile to that observed after intravenous injection of amphotericin B-containing nanospheres (Table 3) [138],... [Pg.158]

Other associations have been investigated by the same methods. Lectin UE-I from Ulex europaeus (Section 15.4.3) and PT-II from Psophocarpus tetragonolobus both bind the H-type trisaccharide glycoside a-L-Fuc-(l—>2)-j3-D-Gal-(1—>4)-)3- D-GlcNAc-(l-OMe). With the Ulex lectin, the thermodynamic parameters are A/r "-29, TAS -20.5 kcal mol" . Again a decrease in entropy is observed. However, with the Psophocarpus lectin, the figures are ATT "- 5.4, TA5° -I- 0.8 kcal mol" . In the latter case, the small increase in entropy seems to indicate an important hydrophobic effect. [Pg.129]

Ulex europaeus seeds contain two agglutinins an L-fucose-binding lectin (U. europaeus I, UFA I) and U. europaeus II (UEA II), which is most potently Inhibited by V-acetylated chitodextrins and L-Fuc(al-2)Gal( 3l-4)GlcNAc. [Pg.423]

For example, glomerular microvascular endothelial cells in culture should maintain the characteristic fenestration, the presence of Weibel-Palade bodies (both observed by transmission electron microscopy), the basal expression of von Willebrand factor and CD 31 (plate-let-endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1) and the binding of lectin Ulex Europaeus (for human cells) [18,19]. [Pg.117]
