Lectins binding sites

Another interesting and recent application of ACE is the fluorescence-enhanced competition assay for the detection of sugar-lectin interactions (77). Because glucose competes with the fluorescently labeled dextran for the lectin-binding sites, the relative fluorescent intensity due to the displaced dextran is proportional to the concentration of glucose. 

The dynamic nature of the PAMAM dendrimers means that appropriate spacings of carbohydrates to achieve optimal binding to multiple lectin binding sites are readily achievable. In addition, because of the highly flexible nature of the functionalized PAMAM, covalent linkage of the carbohydrates is necessary if clustering of carbohydrates is required for optimal biological activity.
