Unit cost data should be carefully assessed to ensure that process type, size, and raw materials are similar to the proposed venture. Operating cost data sometimes are reported for separate categories such as operating labor, maintenance labor, supervision, and utiHties (9). 

Variables It is possible to identify a large number of variables that influence the design and performance of a chemical reactor with heat transfer, from the vessel size and type catalyst distribution among the beds catalyst type, size, and porosity to the geometry of the heat-transfer surface, such as tube diameter, length, pitch, and so on. Experience has shown, however, that the reactor temperature, and often also the pressure, are the primary variables feed compositions and velocities are of secondary importance and the geometric characteristics of the catalyst and heat-exchange provisions are tertiary factors. Tertiary factors are usually set by standard plant practice. Many of the major optimization studies cited by Westerterp et al. (1984), for instance, are devoted to reactor temperature as a means of optimization.

Whether a vessel is called an evaporator or a crystallizer depends primarily on the criteria used in arriving at its sizing. In an evaporator of the salting-out type, sizing is done on the basis of vapor release. In a ciystaUizer, sizing is normally done on the basis of the volume required for crystallization or for special features required to obtain the proper produc t size. In external appearance, the vessels could be identical. Evaporators are discussed in Sec. 11. 

A good solids-hquid separator performs well in service, both initially and over time. It operates rehably day after day, with enough flexibility to accommodate to normal fluctuations in process conditions, and does not require frequent maintenance and repair. Selection of such a separator begins with a preliminary hsting of a number of possible devices, which may solve the problem at hand, and usually ends with the purchase and instaUation of one or more commercially available machines of a specific type, size, and material of construc tion. Rarely is it worthwhile to develop a new land of separator to fill a particular need.

The precise flow-decay pattern will depend on the type, size, and dimensions of the pump. The filter medium can be fibrous, such as cloth granular, such as sand a rigid solid, such as a screen or a mat, such as a felt pad. It can be in the shape of a tube, sheet, bed, fluidized bed, or any other desired form. The material can be natural or man-made fibers, granules, cloth, felt, paper, metal, ceramic, glass, or plastic. It is not surprising that filters are manufactured in an infinite variety of types, sizes, shapes, and materials. 

For the individual wall, the wall element type, size, position, and connections to adjacent zones must be specified. 

For the individual window, the window type, size, and position must be specified. For natural ventilation analysis it may be necessary to specify also the air-tightness characteristics of the windows. 

Each of these options has advantages and disadvantages depending on the type, size, and dispersal of staff in the organization. 

The method of identification depends upon the type, size, quantity, or fragility of the product. You can mark the product directly (provided the item is not an appearance item ) or tie a label to it or the container in which it is placed. You can also use records remote from the product providing they bear a unique identity that is traceable to the product.

Load factor is particularly important with air-cooled machines where sustained full-load operation results in an early build-up of deposits on valves and other parts. This build-up increases the frequency of maintenance required to maintain compressor reliability. Intermittent operation is always recommended for these units. The frequency and duration of unloaded operation depends on the type, size, operating pressure of the compressor. Air-cooled compressors for higher than 200-psig-pressure application are usually rated by a rule that states that the compressing time shall not exceed 30 minutes or less than 10 minutes. Shutdown or unloaded time should be at least equal to compression time or 50 per cent.

NOTE Almost all types of commercial or industrial boilers, of whatever type, size, and application, must be provided with fully softened FW as an absolute minimum form of external water treatment. This requirement includes electrical resistance boilers. Probable exceptions to this rule are HW heating boilers and steam boilers operating at below 15 psig and receiving in excess of 95% returned condensate.
