Transmission channels

At the beam splitter, the phase difference between the fields dictates which way the energy will flow. In the case of E = E and r = 0.5, all the energy is found in the reflected channel and none in the transmission channel when (j> = 0, and vice versa, when = r the total energy is now directed in the transmission direction. Hence, at the beam splitter, a redistribution of the total energy takes place contingent on the phase difference between the two fields. [Pg.220]

Third, problems of data loss in transmission must be addressed, with evidence of prevention and control strategies. These strategies generally relate to the transmission channels, if any, in effect. The use of bis5mchronous channels, bitchecking procedures, and checks digits commonly provide evidence of transmission control. [Pg.183]

Error resilience Depending on the architecture of the bitstream, perceptual coders are more or less susceptible to single or burst errors on the transmission channel. This can be overcome by application of error-correction codes, but with more or less cost in terms of decoder complexity and/or decoding delay. [Pg.321]

On the other hand, four abstraction layers have been considered to model communication processes. First, the description layer gives information about given input or output functionality, and if the data are persistent. On the next abstraction layer, data sources and sinks are combined to transmission channels, characterized by the media coding used. In general, an application will use several channels, e.g. one for audio and one for video transmissions. To integrate these channels into a communication process, contexts between channels are created on the third layer. So far, the whole specification is independent from communicating applications located on the users hosts. [Pg.275]

It is generally believed that the bases in the centre of the double helix molecule form the pathway for electron transfer. The delocalized p-orbitals in consecutive bases overlap to form a channel for the movement of electrons [7]. The works of Ladik et al. [40] and Bakhshi et al. [41] have led to the assumption that the transmission channels are along the long axis of the DNA molecule [101, 107-109]. Several mechanisms have been given for charge transport in DNA, but the dominant ones are the coherent transport via extended molecular orbitals, and the thermal hopping mechanism. [Pg.447]

In 1988, such a scenario was played out for the first time on a worldwide scale. Since then, numerous incidents have reinforced the public s sense of vulnerability to attacks by insidious code fragments on software and data stored in all kinds of computers. While earlier virus attacks spread via diskettes and later via electronic bulletin boards (in ways that required some user participation through loading infected programs), in recent years, the World Wide Web and more sophisticated e-mail systems have provided transmission channels that facilitated the worldwide spread of the attackers at a unprecedented speed. Moreover, infection which earlier required some explicit action by the victim has become much more stealthy, with the advent of viruses that become activated through the opening (or even previewing) of an apparently innocent attachment to an e-mail document. [Pg.39]

Semiconductor lasers have a tremendous potential for use in optical communication systems due to their high efficiency, small size, and direct modulation capability. Because of their small size, they become the ideal source for optical radiation to be utilized in an optical fiber transmission system. The reason for developing an optical communications system is that these systems can take advantage of the large bandwidth that optics has to offer. For example, in a conventional copper wire communication system, the bandwidth of the transmission channel, i.e., the coaxial cable, is limited to approximately 300 MHz. In a normal telephone conversation, fi equency components up to 3 kHz are required for the listener to understand the conversation. By multiplexing many telephone conversations on different carrier fi equencies, approximately 100,000 conversations can be sent through a single... [Pg.208]

The IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standard for low-rate WPAN (LR-WPAN) supports low data rate communication over a short-range transmission channel. This section reviews several standardized and proprietary networks (or mesh) layer protocols that mn over IEEE 802.15.4-based networks. [Pg.137]

The innovation developed by CTT Group consists of knitting the base fabric, the electrodes as well as the transmission channel, all in one step thanks to a fully fashioned knitted machine, electronically controlled. The main advantage of the fully fashioned technique (Cebulla et al., 2002) lies in the fact that the pieces are already preshaped and just need to be assembled. The transmission channels are used to insert a conductive thread in order to make a connection with the electronic device. [Pg.526]

The two faces created are then attached together along all four sides, and an isolating thread is used to hold the three-dimensional shape also called pillow shape as shown in Fig. 23.3. The transmission channel is formed using a mbe-like stmcture made from nonconductive threads, and a single conductive thread coming from the electrode is inserted in the tube-like stmcmre (Begriche, 2015). [Pg.526]

The end user s receiver then receives the transmitted signal through a bandwidth-limited transmission channel, which consists of any one or combination of coaxial cable, microwave, satellite, fiber optic, or broadcast transmitter. In the television receiver, the modulated RF carrier is amplified and detected to restructure the video signal and synchronizing pulses. These signals are then used to drive the display device, usually a cathode-ray tube (CRT) or other display device, which reproduces an image of the original scene. [Pg.1708]
