Electronic bulletin board

Many databases can be classified in multiple ways because of multiple type data, eg, text and numeric data, text and image data, image and audio data, etc. Also included in the data presented in Table 1 are two additional classes of databases, electronic services and software. Both of these data types could also be classed by form of representation because of use of words and numbers. However, the way in which these databases are used is different and they have special characteristics. Thus they are presented as additional classes. Whereas electronic information services such as bulletin boards, electronic mail, and electronic conferencing contain data that are transitory and nonarchival, these must be included among databases because several of the principal vendors seU these services in the same way as database search services are sold. 

Location of and access to chemical and technical information other than journal articles is avadable through computerized information networks. Electronic bulletin board systems (BBS) provide a telecommunications tool to anyone who has a computer and a modem. Questions can be posted and read by thousands of bulletin board users worldwide, and files and software are easdy transferred from virtually anywhere to one s computer. 

Advancing technology has had an impact on the interstate pipeline mdustiy m other ways. Interstate pipeline shippers now have access to electronic bulletin boards (EBBs) which are developed and maintained by the pipelines and can he accessed by users to purchase transportation seiwices, check on billing, determine status of pipeline utilization, arrange for the storage of gas transported through a pipeline and gain other information that allows the pipeline s capacity to he used efficiently. 

Indeed, if a question is posted on the electronic bulletin board that is part of KShop, it is typical for several Infoscions from around the globe to respond within minutes. 

There are several lists (formerly called electronic bulletin boards) available on the Internet where questions about computational chemistry can be asked and information exchanged freely. With the number of subscribers of these lists ranging from a few hundred to several thousand, usually there is someone willing to offer answers, including those from a beginner. The most famous of these lists, and broadest in terms of topics covered, is the Computational Chemistry List (CCL), which is administered by Dr. Jan K. A scientist should not proclaim a discovery to the public unless the experimental, statistical, or theoretical support for it is of strength sufficient to warrant publication in the scientific literature. An account of the experimental work and results that support a public pronouncement should be submitted as quickly as possible for publication in a scientific journal. Scientists should, however, be aware that disclosure of research results in the public press or in an electronic database or bulletin board might be considered by a journal editor as equivalent to a preliminary communication in the scientific literature.

A growing number of web sites have been developed for pediatric medication information. Most university teaching hospitals and children s medical centers have web sites that include educational programs. For example, the University of Virginia Children s Medical Center web site offers tutorials for health care providers on attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and cerebral palsy, as well as the institution s Pediatric Pharmacotherapy newsletter. - In addition, many professional organizations for pediatric health care practitioners have web sites, as well as mailing lists, chat rooms, or electronic bulletin boards. Two other useful resources on the Internet are PEDINFO and Harriet Lane Links, the latter sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University. These two noncommercial web sites provide a large number of links to pediatrics-related sites, as well as some feedback on the quality of information contained on many of the linked sites. Table 3 lists these web sites and several others that may be of interest to pediatric clinical pharmacists.

The Office of Technology Transfer has taken steps to make the private sector more aware of opportunities for collaboration with PHS agencies by sponsoring an annual conference for the past 3 years highlighting PHS research with potential commercial value. More recently, PHS has established an electronic bulletin board providing outside parties with information about specific collaborative opportunities. 

This clearinghouse and electronic bulletin board contains emissions inventory databases, bulletins, and other emissions information. 

HMIX is an electronic bulletin board which provides information about the prevention of, preparation for, and mitigation of hazardous materials emergencies. Included is information about federal training courses, as well as a literature listing. 

This library system and electronic bulletin board provides information about the field of solid waste management.
