The toxicides of acrylic monomers range from moderate to slight. In general, they can be handled safely and without difficulty by trained personnel following estabhshed safety practices. Table 5 summarizes investigations of the toxicity of the common acrylic monomers in animals under acute toxicity conditions (67). 

Ensure that the contractor/subcontractor can implement a comprehensive health and safety program in compliance with applicable regulations, including accident prevention programs, medical surveillance, training, work practice controls, use of personal protective equipment, and so on.

It is a superior book intended as a safety supplement to operator training courses, operating manuals, and operating procedures. The first edition of these booklets appeared over 40 years ago. The text is a real value at about 50.

Example of a Hawthorne Threat A work-site decides to implement and evaluate a new training program focused on changing safety practices by providing feedback to employees. A consultant examines injuiy records and, with the help of workers and supervisors, develops a checklist of safety practices. The list will be used by the consultant to observe the work force and provide feedback to the employees about their practices. The consultant realizes that his presence (and the taking of observations) could make workers change their normal behavior. To avoid this potential Hawthorne effect, he makes baseline observations on a daily basis until his presence seems to no longer create a reaction and the observations become constant [p. 25]. 

A large number of commercial companies offer hazard communication training programs, many of which do provide videotapes as discussed above. They need to be reviewed prior to purchase. Some, in order to demonstrate compliance with one aspect of a safety program, do not follow good safety practices in other areas. Cost is not necessarily a guide some of the better tapes are among the less costly. 

The business case should not overshadow the fundamentally moral responsibility to do everything you can to protect employees working at heights. But when you continually evolve your program to keep up with the best available equipment, training and safety practices, you prove protecting lives is also good business. I i...
