As previously stated, the American Chemistry Council also recognizes this concept as an integral part of the code of Responsible Care , Process Safety Code of Management Practices, Companies should openly share nonproprietary results from internal process safety incident investigations and related research through the auspices of trade and professional associations, and other networking opportunities. Other organizations should strive to benefit from the lessons learned by others and keep abreast of latest developments and safety alerts. 

A second workshop was organized in The Netherlands (November 19 21, 2003) by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). The nearly 1 million nonprofit organizations currently active in the U.S. provide excellent opportunities to learn about leadership. Of all the nonprofits, trade and professional associations constitute a large portion and are a pervasive force in society. There are more than 23,000 national and over 140,000 state and local associations in the U.S., making it the only country with such an active and fully developed association sector. ... 

The US equivalent is the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), a trade association founded in 1958. PhRMA is a nonprofit scientific and professional organization of more than 100 pharmaceutical manufacturers. The Association promulgates voluntary standards ( Guiding Principles ) for producers, encourages product research and prepares and disseminates information on behalf of the industry. The Association also publishes consumer-orientated informational materials on drug utilisation. Voluntary standards proposed in 2005 include initiatives regarding direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription medicines, use of an electronic system to track pharmaceuticals from the place of manufacture to the place where dispensed, and broader dissemination of clinical study data.

Safety professionals can draw upon voluntary standards and national consensus standards to develop safety performance programs, implement continuous improvement programs related to safety, and develop measures of safety performance. National consensus standards are developed through a process of obtaining input from industry representatives on the development of the standard. This representation can include manufacturers, trade associations, professional organizations, as well as other standards development bodies in the United States, in other countries, or from international coalitions such as the European Community.

Some basic food analytical methods such as determination of °brix, pH, titratable acidity, total proteins and total lipids are basic to food analysis and grounded in procedures which have had wide-spread acceptance for a long time. In organizing the Handbook of Food Analytical Chemistry we chose to categorize on a disciplinary rather than a commodity basis. We have made an effort to select methods that are applicable to all commodities. However, it is impossible to address the unique and special criteria required for analysis of all commodities and all processed forms. There are several professional and trade organizations which focus on their specific commodities, e.g., cereals, wines, lipids, fisheries, and meats. Their methods manuals and professional journals should be consulted, particularly for specialized, commodity-specific analyses.

Industry standards generally are produced by trade associations. A good example of industry standards is the collection of standard test methods produced by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), a professional and technical organization of the paper industry. 

ANSI was founded in 1918 to coordinate standardization activities in the private sector, and today it is the coordinating organization in the U.S. national standards system. In contrast with ASTM it does not develop standards, but it does provide the mechanism for determination of need and arranges for competent organizations to perform the standards development work. The membership of ANSI consists of about 1000 companies and more than 200 trade, technical, professional, labor, and consumer organizations (7).
