Tools construction sites

This manual will address the three components (knowledge, action, and attitude) for the main safety practices encountered in water utilities. After a discussion of safety management, the manual presents safety practices related to hazardous materials, confined spaces, hazardous energy, personal protective equipment, respiratory equipment, vehicles, tools, construction sites, and facilities. 

The two most important tools an architect has are the eraser in the drawing room and the sledge hammer on the construction site. 

Mechanical devices are such an integral part of everyday life that there are many real-life sources you can investigate to gain more knowledge of their design and use. A construction site is a great place to visit for a day to learn more about hand tools, cranes, pumps, and other devices. Ask the construction supervisor if you can take a tour. 

Another expense which is included under indirect plant cost is the item of construction or field expense and includes temporary construction and operation, construction tools and rentals, home office personnel located at the construction site, construction payroll, travel and living, taxes and insurance, and other construction overhead. This expense item is occasionally included under equipment installation, or more often under engineering, supervision, and construction. Lasers form the basis of precision-measuring tools called interferometers that can measure distances less than 1/100th the thickness of a human hair, and are as useful on construction sites as in laboratories. One measure of competition is response time or speed of response. Blackburn [6] and Stalk [86] describe firms that compete on delivery speed. One example is Atlas Door, an industrial door company that coordinated its supply chain to offer custom door delivery (for reactors or furnaces) within two weeks, when the industry standard was over four months. Atlas performed at this level by coordinating order quotation and scheduling production, excess capacity, and tools, synchronizing all components so that a complete kit was delivered to the construction site. Atlas s market share increased rapidly to 80% of the industry volume within five years, with a 15% price premium. 

Drilling stone with diamond bits is now widely used and concrete, both plain and steel reinforced, brickwork and other masonry have been drilled for many years using diamond core bits (Fig. 61). These tools can range in size from approximately 20 mm to in excess of a meter. They are all metal bonded tools and were until recently designed to operate with water as a coolant. In some areas, the use of water can be inconvenient and a relatively recent development has been the design of core bits which do not need to be cooled with water. These dry drill bits are widely used on construction sites to produce accurate holes in walls for electrical, plumbing and other services (Fig. 62).

Portable electrical tools can reduce much of the hard work for any tradesperson and increase his or her productivity. Electrical tools should be maintained in a good condition and be appropriate for the purpose for which they are used. Construction workers can t do their job without electricity. However, constant activity at a construction site makes it a particularly hazardous environment. Extension cords, temporary wiring panels, water hoses, materials laying around, and constant use of electric tools, make it extremely important that you are careful around electricity. Your life may depend on it. 

If machines, tools, and the workflow are poorly designed, they can place undue stress on tendons, muscles, and nerves. In addition, temperature extremes may aggravate or increase ergonomic stress. Your ability to recognize ergonomic problems on the construction site is the essential first step in correcting these problems and improving construction worker safety and health. 

Flammable liquids give off ignitable vapors. This, plus the fact that there are many ignition sources (such as a hand tool that sparks, or a cutting torch) at construction sites, is a real threat. Respect for, and proper use and care of flammable liquids is critical to a safe jobsite. 

OSHA rules for heavy equipment, falls, power lines, electrical equipment, tools, excavations, carbon monoxide, and asphalt fiimes are covered throughout 29 CFR1926. OSHA rules for highway construction sites (also called work zones) can be found in 29 CFR 1926 Subpart G ( 1926.200 -. 203). Unfortrmately, OSHA does not provide much in the way of protecting workers from hazards of work zone traffic. However, while the Department of Transportation (DOT) has the intention of protecting motorists and pedestrians, it also provides some protection for road workers rmder 23 CFR 630 Subpart J and K and 23 CFR 655 Subpart F. 

Although covered very little in Part 1926, chain saws can be one of the most dangerous power tools at a construction site. They are often used during site clearing operations. If yoru employees use chain saws, you are required to instruct them on their safe use and to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions. Be srue to follow the written operating, adjustment, and maintenance instructions, as well as safety precautions, provided by the manufactruer of your chain saw(s).
