Once a critical instrument loop is identified, a procedure for testing the entire loop must be written. The test procedure will influence the design of the new system, since, if possible, the test should be an actual performance test. For example, if a high temperature should close a valve, the ideal test would consist of raising the temperature to see if the value closes. Efforts should be made to avoid test procedures which require temporary wiring disconnects, valve closures, and so on, which might not be returned properly to operating condition. 

Drying of the wood should be prevented by periodically wetting the idle zone. A shutdown switch should also be available at a distance of at least 5 m from the tower. The vicinity of a cooling tower should be a no-smoking zone. All hot work and temporary wiring should be carefully supervised and checked. 

Have a supply of circuit breakers, fuses, GFCIs, etc., on hand to explain their functions for protecting workers. Promote the fact that these are only mechanical devices and subject to failure. The best accident preventive methods are stiU correct installation of temporary wiring and safe work places and practices.

Construction workers can t do their job without electricity. However, constant activity at a construction site makes it a particularly hazardous environment. Extension cords, temporary wiring panels, water hoses, materials laying around, and constant use of electric tools, make it extremely important that you are careful around electricity. Your life may depend on it. 

However, it is also true that cord sets, assembled in the field by qualified persons, are appropriately used in both general industry and in the construction industry, vmder hmited circrun-stances. Such cord sets are considered to be temporary wiring extensions of the branch circuit. 

Make any temporary wiring or jumpers yellow or orange and installed in a manner indicating that this is obviously the purpose. 

I I) General requirements for temporary wiring—(A) Feeders shall originate in a distribution center. The conductors shall be run as multiconductor cord or cable assemblies or within raceways or, where not subject to physical damage, they may be run as open conductors on insulators not more than 10 feet (3.05 m) apart.

Plugging the cord of the fan into an extension cord which is then plugged into the permanent wiring of the building that has grounding protection in the outlet would seem to provide adequate protection, but since that extension cord is considered to be temporary wiring, the fan would need a GFCI per 1910.304(b)(3)(ii).

Despite the improvements in conveyor safety, guards and other safeguards are sometimes removed, thus disabling these safety devices. In one case, a maintenance worker bypassed a safety limit switch by using a jumper wire to disengage the switch. A serious injury occurred because the maintenance worker failed to remove the temporary wire. 

Avoid microshocks to the patient by making sure that the bed and all electrical equipment is grounded properly and that all pacing wires and connections to temporary wires are insulated with moisture-proof material (such as a disposable glove).
