Textile Tapes

Fabric-based PSA tapes combine low stiffness with high tensile strength and low elongation. Usually they are tearable by hand. The backside can be open, coated with an acrylic finish, or extrusion coated with PE copolymers. Duct tapes are produced by [Pg.119]

In conventional tenter orientation, the sequence of steps is as described above (MD—TD). In some cases it is advantageous to reverse the draw order (TD—MD) or to use multiple draw steps, eg, MD—TD—MD. These other techniques are used to produce "tensilized" films, where the MD tensile properties are enhanced by further stretching. The films are generally unbalanced in properties and in extreme cases may be fibrillated to give fiber-like elements for special textile appHcations. RCF is sold in a variety of forms, such as loose fiber, blanket, boards, modules, cloth, cements, putties, paper, coatings, felt, vacuum-formed shapes, rope, braid, tape, and textiles. The products are principally used for industrial appHcations as insulation in furnaces, heaters, kiln linings, furnace doors, metal launders, tank car insulation, and other uses up to 1400°C. Asbestos fibers have also been widely used for the fabrication of papers and felts for flooring and roofing products, pipeline wrapping, electrical insulation, etc. Asbestos textiles, comprising yam, thread, cloth, tape, or tope, also found wide apphcation in thermal and electrical insulation, friction products in brake or clutch pads, etc. In recent years, some of these appHcations have decreased to various extents, although others remain fairly active, typically in friction materials. [Pg.354]

Low viscosity cellulose acetate is used in lacquers and protective coatings for paper, metal, glass, and other substrates and as an adhesive for cellulose photographic film because of its quick bonding rate and excellent bond peel strength (135) (see Coatings). Heat-sensitive adhesives for textiles have also been prepared from cellulose acetate (136). A number of higher poly(vinyl ether)s, in particular the ethyl and butyl polymers, have found use as adhesives. When antioxidants are incorporated, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes from poly(vinyl ethyl ether) are said to have twice the shelf life of similar tapes from natural rubber. Copolymers of vinyl isobutyl ether with methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate (Acronal series) and with vinyl chloride have been commercially marketed. The first two products have been used as adhesives and impregnating agents for textile, paper and leather whilst the latter (Vinoflex MP 400) has found use in surface coatings. [Pg.476]

Terpene monomers are another class of interesting natural monomers because they give, on polymerization, hydrocarbon therplastic resins that exhibit a high degree of tackiness useful in pressure sensitive tapes [25]. They are also used for sizing paper and textile materials. Terpene-phenol resins are effective heat stabilizers for high-density polyethylene. [Pg.419]

Because flexible films have excellent strength and good electrical and thermal properties, have low permeability to gases, water, oil, odour and could be sterilised so they are used in capacitors, cables, magnetic recording tapes, typewriter ribbons, food packaging, tracing film, book covers, etc. The film is coated with aluminium by vacuum disposition and used for decoration and in textiles. [Pg.186]

P.R.176 provides very lightfast polyacrylonitrile spin dyeing products. The samples equal step 6-7 on the Blue Scale. Dry and wet crocking may affect the objects to a certain extent. P.R.176 is also used in polypropylene spin dyeing, especially for coarse textiles, such as carpet fibers, split fibers, filaments, bristles, or tape, but also for finer denier yams. A special pigment preparation for this purpose is commercially available. 1/3 SD samples tolerate exposure to up to 300°C for one minute or up to 290°C for 5 minutes. In terms of lightfastness, 0.1% colorations equal step 5-6 on the Blue Scale, while 2% samples match step 7. [Pg.364]

Materials based on amorphous silica fibres are of special interest these are manufactured in a variety of textile forms (cloth, tape, rope, etc.) which can be used for several applications (thermal, electric insulation) for service temperatures generally up to about 1000°C. Typically they contain 93-96% Si02 about 4% Al203 and small quantities of Ca or alkali oxides. [Pg.541]

Table 11.6 shows the uses of TA/DMT. TA or DMT is usually reacted with ethylene glycol to give poly(ethylene terephthalate) (90%) but sometimes it is combined with 1,4-butanediol to yield poly(butylene terephthalate). Polyester fibers are used in the textile industry. Films find applications as magnetic tapes, electrical insulation, photographic film, and packaging. The electron spectra discussed were taken on woven pieces or fibers attached to double backed tape in a manner such that minimal tape was exposed. The other major uses of acrylic latexes are in textile finishing (e.g., stain and wrinkle resistance), adhesives, and floor polishes and waxes. Adhesives are used in many applications, including pressure-sensitive tapes, contact adhesives, and construction adhesives for carpeting and floor tiles. There are many applications for polymeric waterborne adhesives. These include packaging adhesives, pressure-sensitive tape, coatings for textiles, wood adhesives, and various industrial adhesives and coatings. The potential applications for waterborne epoxy adhesives are more limited due to their lack of tack and pressure-sensitive characteristics and the time it takes for the chemical reaction to complete cure.
