Another textile use of acryUc polymers is fabric finishing, to impart a desired hand or feel, or to aid soil release, or for permanent-press features. Copolymers of acrylate esters with acryUc or methacrylic acid serve as thickeners for a variety of textile coating formulations (see Textiles, finishing). [Pg.172]

The consumption of polymer dispersions in 1997 was 10xl06 t. The market is divided among styrene-butadien dispersions (35 %), dispersions containing vinyl acetate (32 %), styrene and styrene-acrylate dispersions (25 %) and others in minor quantities. The other major uses of acrylic latexes are in textile finishing (e.g., stain and wrinkle resistance), adhesives, and floor polishes and waxes. Adhesives are used in many applications, including pressure-sensitive tapes, contact adhesives, and construction adhesives for carpeting and floor tiles. Most vinyl acetate is converted into polyvinyl acetate (PVA) which is used in the manufacture of dispersions for paints and binders and as a raw material for paints. It is also copolymerized with vinyl chloride and ethylene and to a lesser extent with acrylic esters. A substantial proportion of vinyl acetate is converted into polyvinyl alcohol by saponification or transesterification of polyvinyl acetate. The main applications for polyvinyl alcohol are either as raw material for adhesives or for fibres. It is also employed in textile finishing and paper glueing, and as a dispersion agent (protective colloid). The world production capacity of PVA was 4.35 Mt/a in 2005, of which 2.1 Mt were converted into polyvinyl alcohol. [Pg.73]

Acrylic or methacryTic acid, at about 2 - 3% of monomers, is often a conponent, helping latex stability, curing and adhesive properties. The major monomers are often present in quite conplex mixtures to suit specific applications. Research into controlled-release antimicrobials continues with organo-silver compounds and silver zeolites, which are promising candidates for textile finishes. Silver ions, for example, incorporated in glass ceramic, have a very low toxicity profile and excellent heat stability. In the textile field, acrylate dispermons also provide highly derirable types of finishes. Applied to cotton and rayon, they contribute a firmer hand, improved tensile and tear strength, and better abrasion and wear resistance. Th., are free from color, and remain so. Aluminum chloride hydrate is used in textile finishing to impart crease recovery and nonyeUowing properties to cotton (qv) fabrics, antistatic characteristics to polyester, polymide, and acrylic fabrics, and to improve the flammability rating of nylon (see Textiles).
