Acrylic fabrics

This new lower price changed the comparative economic advantages of some of the newer plastics and led to a search for new uses of acrylonitrile and its polymers and copolymers. A new route to Dacron was developed by du Pont using this lower priced acrylonitrile and the use of acrylic fabrics grew rapidly. There was also an increase in uses of ABS and acrylonitrile production capacity. [Pg.579]

Recently, nitrilases have been applied to polymer modification, specifically to the modification of polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Nearly 3 x 106 tons of PAN are produced per annum and used in the textile industry. However, there is a great need to improve moisture uptake, dyeability with ionic dyes, and feel of this acrylic fiber. The cyano moieties of PAN have been successfully modified to carboxylates with the commercial Cyanovacta nitrilase, thus enhancing the aforementioned properties of PAN [98]. Nitrilase action on the acrylic fabric was improved... [Pg.192]

Aluminum chloride hydrate is used in textile finishing to impart crease recovery and nonyeUowing properties to cotton (qv) fabrics, antistatic characteristics to polyester, polymide, and acrylic fabrics, and to improve the flammability rating of nylon (see Textiles). Dye-bleeding of printed textile may be blocked (17) by treatment with aluminum chloride and zinc acetate, Zn(02CCH2)2j followed by solubilizing with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, and washing from the fabric. [Pg.149]

Acrylic fibers discolor and decompose rather than melt when heated. Acrylic fibers, however, have very good color and heat stability at temperatures less than 230°C. In a study by American Cyanamid (using Federal Test Specification TT-P-141a Method 425.2), the yellowness of acrylic fabric was measured as a function of temperature [365]. Compared with a value of 0.00 for a pure-white body, the original fiber had a yellowness index of 0.04-0.10. After 30 min of exposure at 115°C, the yellowness increased only slightly from 0.11 to 0.17. After 6h at 130°C, however, the yellowness increased from 0.38 to 0.41. [Pg.916]

In certain cases, identifying the specific garment or textile product and the allergen it contains will be an important undertaking. The fiber content of the fabric will narrow the possible dyes, as certain dyes are used to color certain fibers. Cotton, rayon, and linen fabrics are dyed with direct, fiber-reactive, mordant, azoic, sulfur, and vat dyes. Wool fabrics are dyed with acid, mordant, and fiber-reactive dyes. Polyester fabrics are dyed with disperse dyes unless the polyester is modified to accept basic dyes. Nylon fabrics are colored with acid and disperse dyes unless modified to accept basic dyes. Acrylic fabrics are dyed with basic and disperse dyes. Acetate fabrics are dyed with disperse dyes. Other synthetic fibers are dyed with disperse dyes. [Pg.632]

The roll-to-roll process of their integration by lamination to the fabric of awnings has been successfully developed and tested. It is economically viable and its scale up to large-scale industrial production seems to be possible and relatively easy. There are still several details to be solved, such as finding a reliable provider of a large volume of flexible PV cells. The ageing issues of the composite acrylic fabric—PV cells will probably have to be improved even if the first results are quite encouraging. [Pg.421]

The study of printed inks is a challenge for the infrared spectroscopist, especially because the sample typically has to be studied in situ. Single-refiection micro-ATR is the only practical sampling method because of the high spectral background associated with the substrate material, which is usually paper or some other cellulosic material. Multiple internal reflection has been used for determining commercial FRs in formulations and as finishes on acrylic fabrics [195]. 1102 and Fc203 photocatalysts immobilised on modified PE films were studied by ATR-FTIR andXPS [196]. Reflection infrared can further... [Pg.33]
