The process has been applied to kerosene to improve the smoke point and for desulfurization. It is applied to selected naphthas for the recovery of high-octane-number blending stocks and for the recovery of lacquer diluents (aromatic hydrocarbons). Diesel fuels of high Diesel Index and ignition quality can be made from selected gas oils. [Pg.352]

As solvents, the amyl alcohols are intermediate between hydrocarbon and the more water-miscible lower alcohol and ketone solvents. Eor example, they are good solvents and diluents for lacquers, hydrolytic fluids, dispersing agents in textile printing inks, industrial cleaning compounds, natural oils such as linseed and castor, synthetic resins such as alkyds, phenoHcs, urea —formaldehyde maleics, and adipates, and naturally occurring gums, such as shellac, paraffin waxes, rosin, and manila. In solvent mixtures they dissolve cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, and ceUulosic ethers. [Pg.376]

Typically, a polymer is first dissolved in a mixture of miscible solvents and nonsolvents. This mixture (lacquer solution) is frequently a better polymer solvent than any of the components (3,4). The lacquer solution is dearated and spread as a thin film on a suitable support. The surface of the film is then placed in contact with a nonsolvent diluent (precipitant) miscible with the solvent. This precipitates or gels the surface almost instantaneously. [Pg.293]

Acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, dimethylformamide, ethyl acetate, and tetrahydrofuran are solvents for vinyhdene chloride polymers used in lacquer coatings methyl ethyl ketone and tetrahydrofuran are most extensively employed. Toluene is used as a diluent for either. Lacquers prepared at 10—20 wt % polymer sohds in a solvent blend of two parts ketone and one part toluene have a viscosity of 20—1000 mPa-s (=cP). Lacquers can be prepared from polymers of very high vinyhdene chloride content in tetrahydrofuran—toluene mixtures and stored at room temperature. Methyl ethyl ketone lacquers must be prepared and maintained at 60—70°C or the lacquer forms a sohd gel. It is critical in the manufacture of polymers for a lacquer apphcation to maintain a fairly narrow compositional distribution in the polymer to achieve good dissolution properties. [Pg.442]

Uses. As a diluent for lacquers, varnishes, and dyes in the production of resins as a component of fragrances also found as a byproduct in the manufacture of sulfite paper pulp... [Pg.201]

DILUENT. (I) An ingredient used to reduce the concentration of an active material to achieve a desirable and beneficial effect. Examples are combination of diatomaceous earth with nitroglycerin to term the much less shock-sensitive dynamite addition of sand to cement mixes to improve workability with no serious loss of strength addition of an organic liquid having no solvent power to a paint or lacquer to reduce viscosity and achieve suitable application properties. [Pg.495]

Store pesticide containers with the label in plain sight. Costly errors can result if the wrong pesticide is used by mistake. Labels should always be legible. They may be damaged or destroyed by exposure to moisture, dripping pesticide, diluents, or dirt. You can use transparent tape or a coating of lacquer or polyurethane to protect the label. If the label is destroyed or damaged, request a replacement from the pesticide dealer or the pesticide formulator immediately. [Pg.264]

Amyl alcohols are used as solvents for resins and gums as diluents for lubricants, printing inks, and lacquers and as frothers in ore flotation process. Amyl xanthates are used as ore collectors in the mining industry. [Pg.147]

Benzene is used as a solvent for waxes, resins, and oils as a paint remover as a diluent for lacquers in the manufacture of dyes, pharmaceuticals, varnishes, and linoleum and as a raw material to produce a number of organic compounds. [Pg.517]
