But potassium nitrate is also used in toothpastes that are formulated to make teeth less sensitive to pain. As gums recede and the tooth root dentin becomes exposed, teeth can become hypersensitive to hot or cold foods. Potassium nitrate interferes with the transmission of pain signals in the nerves of the teeth. [Pg.171]

Most people have at some time experienced a severe pain in their teeth after accidentally eating a piece of sweet wrapper. Those teeth that hurt are usually nowhere near the scrap of wrapper. The only people who escape this nasty sensation are those without metal fillings in their teeth. [Pg.279]

While it feels as though all the mouth fills with this pain, in fact the pain only manifests itself through those teeth filled with metal, the metal being silver dissolved in mercury to form a solid - we call it a silver amalgam. Corrosion of the filling s surface causes it to bear a layer of oxidized silver, so the tooth filling also represents a redox couple, with silver and silver oxide coexisting. [Pg.280]

So ultimately the pain we feel in our teeth comes from a flow of current. [Pg.280]

The presenting complaints of overexposed workers may be toothache and excessive salivation. There may be a dull red appearance of the oral mucosa. One or more teeth may loosen, followed by pain and swelling of the jaw healing may be delayed after dental procedures such as extractions with necrosis of bone, a sequestrum may develop with sinus tract formation. In a series of 10 cases, the shortest period of exposure to phosphorus fume (concentrations not measured) that led to bone necrosis was 10 months (2 cases), and the longest period of exposure was 18 years. ... [Pg.583]

A 17-year-old woman with cystic fibrosis is evaluated for knee pain. On review of systems, she also notes persistent bleeding from cuts in her skin and bleeding of her gums after brushing her teeth. Physical examination is remarkable for an obviously swollen right knee that is tender with limited range of motion. Fluid drained from the knee is bloody (hemarthrosis). Her complete blood count is normal, but prothrombin time is elevated. [Pg.182]

Headache is one of the most frequent complaints which mankind suffers from. Most commonly the headache starts from one of the pain sensitive structures of the skull, but diseases originating outside the skull are also important causes of headache. Diseases of the eye, sinuses, jaw, teeth and neck often cause headache, but also visceral tissue may give rise to headache. The headache may be secondary to many diseases, e.g. anaemia and hypertension. Drug induced headache is not uncommon, either as an adverse reaction, e.g. to calcium antagonists and SSRIs, or as part of more complex problems in chronic headache. [Pg.499]

A 37-year-old woman visited her dentist for removal of her wisdom teeth. The teeth were found to be impacted, and removal necessitated extensive surgery. Following completion of the procedure on one side of the mouth, the patient was given a prescription for acetaminophen 300 mg with codeine 30 mg (combination product) for the relief of pain. The most common oral condition and dental emergency is dental caries, which is a destructive disease of the hard tissues of the teeth due to bacterial infection with Streptococcus mutans and other bacteria. It is characterized by destruction of enamel and dentine. Dental decay presents as opaque white areas of enamel with grey undertones and in more advanced cases, brownish discoloured cavitations. Dental caries is initially asymptomatic and pain does not occur until the decay impinges on the pulp, and an inflammation develops. Treatment of caries involves removal of the softened and infected hard tissues, sealing of exposed dentines and restoration of the lost tooth structure with porcelain, silver, amalgam, composite plastic, gold etc. [Pg.425]

Secondary symptoms Restlessness, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, chronic bleeding gums without pain, loss of teeth, spermatorrhea, turbid, scanty and dark urine, difficult and painful urination. [Pg.112]
