Technical information safety data sheets

The first step is to identify the substances present at the workplace. As a starting point, knowledge of the process is needed in order to formulate a list of all chemical agents used in the establishment. The list should include not only primary products but also intermediate and final products, as well as reaction products and by-products. For the chemical agents in the list, it is necessary to know their chemical properties, especially hazardous ones their OEL values, including biological limit values and, where these are not available, other technical criteria that can be used to evaluate the risk. It is also helpful to include any information on the safety and health risks of those substances provided by the supplier or other readily available sources. This information on dangerous substances and preparations, in the form of safety data sheets, is intended primarily for industrial users, to enable them to take the measures necessary to ensure the safety and health of workers. [Pg.369]

This is the reason why safety data sheets cannot replace such instmctions. Whereas safety data sheets are addressed to the employer, the instmctions are designed for the workers. Of course, the information and recommendations of safety data sheets provide the background and the main sources used in the preparation of instmctions. Chemical manufacturers and importers have to evaluate the hazards of the chemicals they produce or import. Using that information, they prepare labels for containers and more detailed technical bulletins called safety data sheets (SDSs). [Pg.154]

A Google search can also be used to identify many Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for a chemical. (See Section 3.1.3 for an explanation of SDSs and MSDSs.) While these first seem like reliable sources, you should know that the federal law that mandates their existence does not require that they be accurate Furthermore, since SDSs are both technical and legal documents (because they carry liability for their authors) some comments about the hazards of chemicals are overstated or too vague to be useful. All test chemicals should be filed in a central repository after receipt and proper accessioning. A chemical safety data sheet (Figure 2) should accompany all compounds with proper storage conditions defined. Examples of its many publications are Chemical Safely Data Sheets, Codes of Practice, Manuals, and Technical Guides.
