Mil STD-882B (11) outlines the general concepts of Systems Safety. Notice 1 (12) appended to that document specifically covers requirements for software systems safety. The Air Force also has a Software Systems Safety Handbook (13). A number of recent articles in Hazafd Prevention (14), the Journal of the Systems Safety Society, expanded on the technical content of this handbook. The concepts were covered in a more explicit and useful manner by Erwin Schoitsch of the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf in a recent forty-two page, two-part, article (15).

Most major DOD agencies and contractors involved in the traditional weapons and aerospace programs have internal system safety organizations to plan and implement system safety efforts. The majority of the nation s system safety engineers tend to work for these organizations and, by and large, provide the membership for the System Safety Society. 

Thus the MORT approach to system safety tends to be more closely aligned with occupational safety programs. Department of Energy and contractor safety personnel, including those with MORT training and system safety responsibilities, tend to be more closely aligned with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the National Safety Council (NSC) than with the System Safety Society.

Perry D Antonio, a manager at the Sandia National Laboratories and a former International President of the System Safety Society, says that I view professionalism as transient in nature— much like an electrical circuit in which you need a continuous power source to ensure a fully charged circuit. In this metaphor, professional development is the power source. Professionalism is achieved when an individual s methods, behavior, skill, performance, and spirit of dedication to excel are commensurate with other recognized professional practitioners in the same occupation.Thus, the state of professionalism requires continuous dedication to appropriate professional development activities to ensure the professional practitioner maintains technical excellence in an ever changing world (RE. D Antonio, personal communication, August 13,2003). 

With this advice from an old-timer in the field, it s appropriate to reinforce what was said with information from the By-Laws Principles and Canons of the System Safety Society. Peers. In the eyes of your peers, achievement of safety certification demonstrates that you have made the effort to prove your ability to meet a high professional standard in the field. In the System Safety Society, it provides higher point-value when advancing toward the achievement of Fellow designation within the Society.

APPENDIX II SYSTEM SAFETY SOCIETY FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES AND CANONS... 

The System Safety Society publishes the Journal for System Safety and texts, which include the System Safety Analysis Handbook that has been sold in 38 countries. The Society also honors its own members annually for various achievements and provides a vast networking opportunity for members to solve problems and identify job opportunities. 

A joint conference of safety practitioners, led by the System Safety Society chapter in Washington, D.C., did much to expose the full capabilities of the systems approach to safety. The meeting produced a list of more than thirty techniques and approaches for use in system safety that were fully covered in the Journal of the System Safety Society. At least three interesting points emerged ... 

Paige Ripani, past national president of the System Safety Society, acknowledged not just for her foreword to the 2" edition, but also for more than 15 years of dedication to the field of system safety. 

Warner Talso is the conscience of the System Safety Society and has been for more than ten years. He is the editorial power behind the publication of the first two editions of the System Safety Analysis Handbook. He is a best friend, a confident, and former Army nuclear weapons officer. I ll miss our Saturday breakfast burritos since my wife and I have moved to Nevada. 

Finally, to my wife and most fervent supporter, Jo, who allowed me to add this volunteer project to my plate in the midst of family, work. Board of Certified Safety Professionals activities, and System Safety Society obligations.

Olson, R. E. (undated). System Safety Handbook for the Acquisition Manager, Air Force Space Division, Directorate of Safety, distributed by the System Safety Society, Sterling, VA. 

One example is system safety. This specialty resulted from a need to identify hazards and potential failures in military and high technology systems and equipment. The specialty developed a number of methods that will be discussed in Part V. The membership organization for this specialty is the Intemafional System Safety Society. 

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) examines systems, element by element (Systems Safety Society 1997,3-111). The analysis procedure requires the identification of the individual components that make up the system under examination. With the components identified, the modes in which the component failures as well as the effects that that failure has upon the system are determined. A further step to the FMEA procedure is the examination of the risk associated with the failure. The risk, also referred to as criticality, provides the investigators with a method of ranking the hazards in the system and providing a method for prioritization of hazards.
