Synthesis and Physical Properties

The carbonyls Ni(CO)4 and Fe(CO)5 (both highly toxic) are the only ones normally obtained by action of CO on the finely divided metal. Formation of Ni(CO)4 (equation 21.4) occurs at 298 K and 1 bar pressure, but Fe(CO)5 is made under 200 bar CO at 420-520 K. Most other simple metal carbonyls are prepared by reductive carbonylation, i.e. action of CO and a reducing agent (which may be excess CO) on a metal oxide, halide or other compound (e.g. reactions 23.3-23.10). Yields are often poor and we have not attempted to write stoichiometric reactions for the preparation of [Tc(H20)3(C0)3]+, see Box 22.7. [Pg.710]

Diiron nonacarbonyl, Fe2(CO)g, is usually made by photolysis of Fe(CO)5 (equation 23.11), while Fe3(CO)j2 is obtained by several methods, e.g. oxidation of [HFe(CO)4] using Mn02. [Pg.710]

Some metal carbonyls including M(CO)g (M = Cr, Mo, W), Fe(CO)5, Fe2(CO)g, Fc3(CO)i2, Ru3(CO),2, Os3(CO)i2 and Co2(CO)g are commercially available. All carbonyls are thermodynamically unstable with respect to oxidation in air, but the rates of oxidation vary Co2(CO)g reacts under ambient conditions, Fe(CO)5 and Ni(CO)4 are also easily oxidized (their vapours forming explosive mixtures with air), but M(CO)6 (M = Cr, Mo, W) does not oxidize unless heated. Table 23.3 lists some physical properties of some of the more common metal carbonyls. Note the increased importance of M—M bonding as one descends groups 8 and 9 e.g. whereas Co2(CO)g is stable, Rh2(CO)g is unstable with respect to Rh4(CO)i2. The latter can also be formed by reaction 23.12, and above 400 K, it decomposes to Rh6(CO)i6. Reactions 23.13 and 23.14 are routes to Ir4(CO)i2 and Ir6(CO)i6. [Pg.710]

Metal carbonyl clusters containing four or more metal atoms are made by a variety of methods osmium in particular forms a range of binary compounds and pyrolysis of Os3(CO)i2 yields a mix of products (equation 23.15) which can be separated by chromatography. [Pg.710]

Metal cluster anions are usnally stabilized in salts that contain large cations common choices are [Ph4P], [Ph As], Bu4N] and [(Ph3P)2N]. Compatibility [Pg.711]

Moreover, the carbon-carbon lengths between the rings are in the range expected for Csp2-Csp2 bonds. These solid state data indicate that an efficient delocalization of the Ti-system takes place over the three heterocycles in oligomers 3a,b, as supported by theoretical studies [7d], [Pg.298]

Phospholes 3a,b are also fluorophores and their Aem values depend on the nature of the 2,5-substituents. A blue emission is observed for l-phenyl-2,5-di(2-pyridyl)phosphole 3b = 463 nm) whereas the emission of 1-phenyl-2,5-di(2- [Pg.298]

This work describes the application of a previous study which dealt primarily with organic synthesis and physical properties of reaction products of pure fatty acids with BETA. Derivatives to amplify the previous study were prepared from various industrial fatty materials. The reaction product, from 1 mole diethylenetriamine (BETA) with 2 moles fatty acid, was thought to be the primary amine, RC0N(CH2CH2NH2) CH2CH2NHCOR, rather than the secondary amine, as cited in the literature. The amine was readily dehydrated to the imidazoline,... [Pg.209]

We begin with a brief summary of some of the review articles that have been written on the subject of ionic liquids. Wilkeswrote a short history of ionic liquids describing the chronological development of ionic liquids with an emphasis on listing the names and pictures of those involved in the research. Holbrey and Seddon and Earle and Seddon reviewed the literature of ionic liquids composed entirely of ions which were mainly of interest to electrochemists. Recently, however, it has become apparent that, inter alia, their lack of measurable vapor pressure characterizes them as green solvents, and that a wide range of chemical reactions (reviewed here) can be performed in them. Wassercheid and Keim reviewed the literature of ionic liquids, not only the synthesis and physical properties of the ILs, but also their use as... [Pg.156]

The discovery of hexamethyltungsten by Shortland and Wilkinson (259, 260) has prompted an interest in the synthesis and physical properties of alkylated transition metal compounds. The relatively high thermal stability of these derivatives is plausibly ascribed to the lack of a low-energy decomposition pathway. This is particularly true in the case of ligands such as Me3SiCH2 — and Me3 CCH2 for which /3-hydrogen transfer is precluded (43, 282). [Pg.133]

These main-chain dendrimers may represent an interesting alternative for the development of original molecular materials having a new architecture. Shibaev et al. foresaw the elaboration of such compounds, but have not yet reported on their synthesis and physical properties [ 151]. Up to now two famines of such systems have been identified, namely the willow-like and the octopus dendrimers. [Pg.105]

Nanocrystal and cluster science is the study of the chemical synthesis and physical properties of individual nanocrystals and nanotubes. It seeks to understand the evolution of molecular properties into solid state properties with increasing size. Methods include so-called bottom-up chemical synthesis of nanocrystals, nanowires, and very large species, as well as physical molecular beam approaches. Advanced physical characterization of single nano-objects by local probe methods and optics is critical here. The area is intrinsically interdisciplinary at the junction of physics, chemistry, and materials science. Outstanding chemical research in nanocrystal science is often found in a wide variety of science and engineering departments. [Pg.56]

Nanomaterials energy and applications As nanocrystals and nanotubes are better understood, it becomes possible to rationally design nano-structured materials for specific purposes. This area includes both chemical synthesis and physical properties of nanostructured materials incorporating fullerenes, organic conductive polymers, and inorganic nanostructures. A central goal is composite materials for solar energy utilization—new types of solar cells. [Pg.56]
