Sustainable Plastics Environmental Assessments of Biobased, Biodegradable, and Recycled Plastics, First Edition. Joseph P. Greene. [Pg.1]

The first aspect of sustainability can measure the impacts of products and processes on the society. The societal impact of using a material and [Pg.2]

Sustainable workplaces feature the maintaining of welfare levels in the future (WCED 1987). Welfare can be defined as a subjective measure of the sum of all individual s utilities generated from the consumption of goods, products, and services (Perman et al. 2003). [Pg.3]

Economic impacts of sustainability can be measured with a capital approach that can be defined as maintaining economic, environmental, human, and social capital over time for future generations (Kulig, Kolfoort, and Hoekstra 2010). The capital approach can be proposed as a theoretical basis for sustainable development indicators (Atkinson and Hamilton 2003 World Bank 2006 UNECE 2014). The capital approach provides a theoretical approach by measuring all capital stocks in their own units. The capital approach can provide consistent, theoretically sound, and policy-relevant comparisons between countries (Kulig et al. 2010). [Pg.3]

The ISO standards provide a reliable and sustainable definition for product describing data including product structure and behaviour models. [Pg.632]

The human needs component of the sustainability definition was also expanded to encompass the concept of human well-being. This involves much more than just meeting the basic needs of water, food and health. Well-being was defined as a context- and situation-dependent state, comprising basic material for a good life, freedom and choice, health, good social relations, and security. Another perspective on well-being is to equate it to quality of life. [Pg.13]

The need for assessment was recognized more than forty years ago. At the beginning, the focus was on environmental impacts only. With the expansion of sustainability definition to include social and economic goals, assessment began to include the three pillars of sustainability (Pope et al. 2004). Since that, there appeared many assessment methods in the literature (e.g., Devuyst and Hens 2001 Verheem 2002 Buselich 2004 Ness et al. 2007). [Pg.143]

The flash point represents the minimum temperature at whieh an ignitable mixture exists above a liquid surfaee. By definition, flash points are inapplieable to gases. Some solids, e.g. naphtlialene and eamphor, are easily volatilized on heating so that flammable mixtures develop above the solid surfaee and henee flash points ean be determined. (However, although these substanees ean be ignited, they generally need to be heated above their flash points in order for eombustion to be sustained this is the fire point .)... [Pg.179]

In human exercise physiology, fatigue is often defined as an inability of a muscle or a group of muscles to sustain the required or expected force (Edwards, 1981). This definition is very applicable for the study of factors limiting dynamic or isometric exercise in intact organisms at varying intensities. [Pg.240]

Therefore, in this definition process intensification encompasses both novel apparatus and techniques which are designed to bring dramatic improvements in production and processing (Figure 1.8) [25]. As a result, safe, cheaper, compact, sustainable (environmentally friendly), and energy-efficient technologies are obtained. [Pg.12]

In their review some years ago, Reddy and Rao (1986) cited several lines of evidence for peroxisome-proliferation-mediated oxidative stress being associated with hepatocarcinogenesis. They mentioned the sustained increase in hydrogen peroxide production, the detectable increased levels of hydrogen peroxide in the livers of treated animals, increased lipid peroxidation associated with treatment and marked inhibition of hepatocarcinogenesis by antioxidant compounds. However, definitive studies remain to be carried out. [Pg.240]

Furthermore, conjugate poles on the imaginary axis are BIBO stable—a step input leads to a sustained oscillation that is bounded in time. But we do not consider this oscillatory steady state as stable, and hence we exclude the entire imaginary axis. In an advanced class, you should find more mathematical definitions of stability. [Pg.125]

CDC Case Definition An illness caused by S. typhi that is often characterized by insidious onset of sustained fever, headache, malaise, anorexia, relative bradycardia, constipation or diarrhea, and nonproductive cough. However, many mild and atypical infections occur. Carriage of S. typhi may be prolonged. Laboratory criteria for diagnosis is isolation of S. typhi from blood, stool, or other clinical specimen. [Pg.516]

Many different definitions of sustainability have evolved over the past decades (Pretty 2007). Despite this ambiguity, Klauer (1999) for instance stated that common ground of all definitions of sustainability is the preservation of a system... [Pg.114]

Many definitions of sustainable agriculture are reported by literature, but all are related to the basic concept of a profitable crop production with no environmental pollution and depletion of farm and natural resources, including effects on soil, water, and biodiversity (Doran 2002 Francis et al. 2006). Soil solarization seems to fit the fundaments of sustainable agriculture as providing an effective and environmentally safe control of many soilbome pests and more competitive market positions and higher prices to pesticide-free products. [Pg.251]
