Study definition

In problem solving and process studies, the front-end work is important. Proper definition and direction developed at the beginning will assure meeting corporate goals in a timely fashion. This section establishes the type of study example to be used for illustrating principles and philosophy, and presents the basic items necessary to begin such a study. 

Following development of the study direction, the evaluation describes the efforts of obtaining and validating process information, and then discusses equipment specifications and a cost estimate of the feasibility or budget type i.e., with plant costs factored from major material. Finally, project economics and financing complete the evaluation. 

Some fundamental questions should be answered prior to launching into the study details. 

Usually, the evaluation is done by in-house company personnel, a contractor, or a combination. For capital cost estimation it is difficult to beat a contractor. Fie will, of necessity, have an excellent cost-estimation group that is familiar with a wide range of processes and is on a first-

The team will have developed the discipline, as a result of competitive bidding, to produce the kind of final report that fits in correctly with any type of economic evaluation.

Single-dose toxicity studies fall into two categories preliminary and definitive studies. Discrepancies are also identified by a visual review of the data, e.g., monitoring lists, SDV review. Thus, it is the objective of the study that determines whether one experiment, or a set of experiments has to be regarded as a study. On the other hand, this opinion, that a study is defined and held together by its objective, may be questioned in special circumstances. Indeed, there have been practical problems which need to be addressed in the context of study definition, and which are discussed in some detail below.
