Support Functions

The noninvolvement of staff functions and service components in hazard control can hinder success. Do not ignore a natural interface of hazard control management with other support functions such as facility management, purchasing, and human-resource management. Virtually every department and function of a modern organization contributes in some way to the effectiveness of the hazard control

Introduction and commercial application Safety and the environment have become important elements of all parts of the field life cycle, and involve all of the technical and support functions in an oil company. The Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea in 1988 has resulted in a major change in the approach to management of safety of world-wide oil and gas exploration and production activities. Companies recognise that good safety and environmental management make economic sense and are essential to guaranteeing long term presence in the industry. 

Product innovation absorbs considerable resources in the fine chemicals industry, in part because of the shorter life cycles of fine chemicals as compared to commodities. Consequently, research and development (R D) plays an important role. The main task of R D in fine chemicals is scaling-up lab processes, as described, eg, in the ORAC data bank or as provided by the customers, so that the processes can be transferred to pilot plants (see Pilot PLANTS AND microplants) and subsequently to industrial-scale production. Thus the R D department of a fine chemicals manufacturer typically is divided into a laboratory or process research section and a development section, the latter absorbing the Hon s share of the R D budget, which typically accounts for 5 to 10% of sales. Support functions include the analytical services, engineering, maintenance, and Hbrary.

It is also true that the use of multiblend formulations helps to raise operator confidence levels, and, provided the technical support function justifies this confidence by a proactive and responsive approach, there is further added value in the blend. 

Heavy industrial boilers operating in continuous processes may be online for perhaps four or even five years before shutting down for maintenance and inspection. Also, many batch processes, such as those in the specialty chemical industry (e.g., pharmaceuticals, paints, and plastic end-products), have typically located the control and support functions adjacent to the process. In a typical arrangement, the process plant building contains all or most of the process, with the control function frequently housed in a centrally located room within the plant building or an adjacent building. 

Poly(Dat-Tyr-Hex carbonate) is a slowly degrading, strong and ductile material. The management concepts focus on the primary activities in the value chain. Management concepts for support functions such as human resources, information technology or corporate finance are out-of-scope in this work. The integration of support management concepts into value chain management is an area for further research. 

Values in the industry value chain are subjects of financial accounting, profit and cost controlling as well as value-based management research. Out of the scope is the value chain support function of corporate finance concerned with getting required or investing excess financial resources in financial markets, which is not a core activity in the industry value chain and out of the scope in this work. The integration of value chain management with corporate finance is a potential area for further research.
