The chapter is organised in four sections, in which the following topics are discussed farmer issues, food supply chain issues, consumer issues, policy and trade issues. A final section suggests some recently emerging issues.

In this paper, the case study clearly shows that a successful RFID project should have an answer to each of the following in an integrated maimer (1) RFID-specific technological constraints (read-rate issues at freezer level) at the point of use (2) typically operational issues at facility level (such as operators borrowing chemicals from other buffers) that can be controlled by introducing new policies and (3) beyond the four walls of a manufacturer, supply chain issues that need to be resolved. 

However, as fundamental as this concept is and as intuitive as optimization of the supply chain is, many companies still attempt to maximize only that which they specifically control. They overlook the value of the global view. They concentrate only on what they can see in their local operation. The idea of real supply chain optimization is looked upon as something to be done, some objective for the future. Once we get our own act in order, we can move on to the supply chain issues is a common statement from business leaders in every industry. In some cases, when leaders do apply some effort toward supply chain optimization, it is only half-hearted and does not receive the attention or financial budget that it deserves. Those companies, even more so as the Internet makes global business operations a reality, are not only missing some opportunities, they are sealing their fate as noncompetitive businesses in the modern age. 

A formal charter is a good way to start setting the scope. Ideally, the process of determining scope should be broad based, including stakeholders both in the company and with important trading partners. Listing supply chain issues faced by the oiganization facilitates charter development. 

The need to consider the supply chain adds another dimension to the CE concept. Now it is not just tooling and material that must be considered, but also the distribution channels, inventory policy, and other supply chain issues. CE for the entire supply chain particularly fits in the case of B, C, and E products in the development funnel. In these cases, a new product is more likely to be accompanied by a new supply chain. These are likely to be major projects involving a great number of unknowns about the market and the likelihood of commercial success.
