Supervision control system

Selection of the hardware architecture of the Supervision and Control System should be based on the following design criteria [Pg.27]

High grade of expandability of the system is achieved by using a modular design both in software and hardware Modular design enhances the following expandability features [Pg.28]

1 The Supervision and Control System performs several functions which are described in the following sub-sections. [Pg.29]

The supervision and control system should present all information related to system alarm status [Pg.29]

In order to supervise the operation of the voting and protective logic units. Safety Parameters (SP) are sent to both Safety Parameter Display Units (SPDU) in the main and secondary consoles and to the Supervision Control System (SCS) via appropriate interface units. [Pg.26]

Arrangement of the semicommercial pilot plants permitted supervision and operation of the plant from a central control panel. The installed safety control system was tested successfully during several emergency shutdowns with no effect on reactor material and catalyst. [Pg.124]

Introduction The chemical processing industry relies on many types of instrumented systems, e.g., the basic process control systems (BPCSs) and safety instrumented system (SIS). The BPCS controls the process on a continuous basis to maintain it within prescribed control limits. Operators supervise the process and, when necessary, take action on the process through the BPCS or other independent operator interface. The SIS detects the existence of unacceptable process conditions and takes action on the process to bring it to a safe state. In the past, these systems have also been called emergency shutdown systems, safety interlock systems, and safety critical systems. [Pg.103]

Basic Process Control System (BPCS) - Pneumatic, electronic, hydraulic or programmable instruments and mechanisms that monitor and/or operate a facility or system to achieve a desired function, i.e., flow control, temperature measurement, etc., which are supervised by human observation. [Pg.283]

Simply, SCADA is a computer-based control system that remotely controls processes previously controlled manually. The philosophy behind SCADA control systems can be summed up by the phrase, If you can measure it, you can control it. SCADA allows an operator using a central computer to supervise (control and monitor) multiple networked computers at remote locations. Each remote computer can control mechanical processes (mixers, pumps, valves, etc.) and collect data from sensors at... [Pg.118]

Other supervisory signals may come from fire protection system components such as supervised control valves, system air and supervisory air pressure transmitters, water tank level and temperature transmitters, valve house and fire water pump building temperature transmitters, and fire water pumps. [Pg.184]

This consists principally of the host which is used to supervise several process areas and may well have six or more data highways linked to it. Hosts are powerful computers with their own operator stations and other peripherals. They are an integral element of modern control systems and only very small processes may be controlled and monitored effectively without a host. However, if not configured properly, a host computer can be overloaded quite easily and will then fail to operate satisfactorily. One serious loading problem for a host is the fast scanning rate required for DDC loops (usually once per second and up to three times per... [Pg.701]

Microprocessor-based control systems are marketed under a variety of acronyms and not all will be true DCCSs. Of particular note are the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems which form an increasingly central part of the operations of many industries (e.g. offshore oil and gas platforms, petrochemical complexes, pulp and paper works). SCADA describes a communications system whose principal function is to join instrumentation and control into a cohesive package(57) and, particularly, the supervision and management of remote ... [Pg.708]

In most practical combustion installations there are two separate parts of the equipment system (1) the burner itself and (2) all of the peripheral equipment necessary to control the burner operation efficiently and safely. The control equipment includes fuel and oxidant pressure and flow controls automatic shutoff controls flame supervision equipment furnace purge equipment and other related devices. The safety issues of the burner are significantly different in character as compared with the safety issues of the control equipment. In many ways, these two safety issues are diametrically opposed. Within the burner, fire is a desired condition, whereas within the control system and surrounding environment, fire is to be avoided entirely. [Pg.266]

The process control system includes almost all refinery plants, covering not only the process plants but also tankage, pipeline supervision and effluent treatment. The POX/methanol complex and the loading facilities are, however not included in the system. The dispatch computer has been tailored to the details and requirements of the loading operation. The POX/methanol complex is equipped with its own system that is linked with the refinery control room for the purpose of data exchange. Similarly, the refinery power station exchanges data with the refinery control room in order to match the dynamics of supply and demand. [Pg.212]

The quality control system adopted by every production establishment shall be developed through a Quality Inspection Department which will function under the supervision and/or responsibility of a pharmaceutical chemist. This professional shall be invested with the necessary authority and means to be able to carry out his task efficiently, to this end being independent of the other departments and responsible to the administration of establishment, without prejudice to his responsibility to health authorities in accordance with the provisions of the present regulation. [Pg.342]

To date, process control systems like Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have only enabled paperless operation in combination with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems or as part of a DCS (Distributed Control System), which enable measurement and control actions to be recorded and used as part of batch documentation. Process control systems have the advantage that they focus on real-time data as a necessary part of both control and supervision. The real-time focus is very useful for implementing both active and proactive control when combined with, for example, statistical tools or predictive algorithms. [Pg.22]
